I was wondering what the best weapon skill for UW1 and UW2 is.

Personally speaking, I rate sword as the best, coupled with a strong attack level. Mainly as there seem to be more swords lying around in the game; although the fire axe of doom was pretty neat from memory.

Sword or Axe are both good for both games. It's kind of hard to say which is the "best" because neither game gives you enough numerical information about weapons/damage/skills/etc. to make a solid answer one way or the other.
That being said though, ranged weapons are not particularly powerful (plus there's not enough ammo) and there are few enchanted mace type weapons. Both sword and axe, however, have a variety of respectable options at most points of the 2 games.
I usually go Axe in UW1 and Sword in UW2. Somewhat a matter of personal preference though.

I personally go for axe in UW2 for mainly one reason: the Lifestealer.

Lifedrinker or Lifestealer or whatever it's called is good, but not as good as the fire axe (with the appropriate Flameproof protections). That weapon owns pretty much everything.
But yes, missile weapons are unfortunately completely useless.

There's another recentish thread about UW2 weapons, so I'll just repeat myself I guess. Lifestealer is great for
Mors because, if low on health, you can just replenish it by
hacking at her guards for a bit.
After looking at the walkthrough, I'm guessing that the mace in level four of Loth's Tomb does the most damage - it is listed as 'unsurpassed damage'. But maces are otherwise a poor choice. Swords are always tempting because you get a decent one quite early on (
by the reaper in the sewers), but I usually play axes.
My UW1 knowledge is not up to that of UW2. :(

But it's fun dodging yeti snowballs and then throwing them back! In fact, I usually keep a decent stockpile of them, just for the hell of it.
