I want to set up a good thief-like character,any hints on what skills etc should I pick?

All thief skills, of course. I'd put Blade and Marksman in, and I also find shields very valuable (especially considering thieves have lower health than fighters, who can often forego a shield).
Sneak, Security, and Acrobatics should be in there too. Athletics may or may not be good for you (it takes forever to master). You may want to invest in Illusion if you're interested in magic.
Most standard thieves have Marksman (easier sneak bonus), Sneak, and Security. The rest is largely up to you.

i'm really enjoying my thief hybrid...
Blade, Restoration, Illusion, Marksman, Sneak, Security, Light Armor. Use your bow for distance shots against multiples, or sneak in for the critical strike with your blade.

[SPOILER]gain access to the arcane university and go to the enchanting room get 5 grand soul gems and 5 pieces of armor and a chameleon spell enchant the armor with chameleon and youll be invisible but some monsters can see you if you hit them especially trolls[/SPOILER]

You might want to not take sneak as it levels up really fast even as a minor skill.

Really?
I got sneak as a major skill on a character and after 40 levels of non-power leveling, my sneak is still the 2nd or 3rd lowest at 75++ (Lowest was restoration), despite spending lots of time through ruins and caves and sneak attacking many a necromancer ...

my sneak is a major skill.. im only lvl14 but i have a sneak of 93! its even gone over 100 at times, when my vampirism etc is high
my build is Blade, light armour, acrobatics, athletics, sneak, security and illusion. it works quite nicely, but im wishing i had marksman intead of athletics.
