I haven't played SS2 or Thief for a few years now but I feel it pulling me back. I have been reading the forums the past few weeks, seems like it's hit or miss as to how much tweaking one has to do. With that said I could probably throw together a win98 box with PC crap I have packed away but will it be powerful enough to play some of of the more demanding FMs? Box would consist of:
AMD Socket A 1.2Mhz
1gig ram
GeForce 6 AGP
Creative Live 5.1
I know the GF6 is over kill for a Socket A system but its the only AGP card I have now. Or should I play and tweak my system to get the games working? Thing is I would like to play with fog and everything. Sounds like this is the most tricky part.
Thanks in advance.

You're just biased, NV. ;)
Getting TG and T2 running in Vista64 was no problem. I only needed imagecfg due to my dual core processor, but use DDFix as well to get better resolution support. As for the lack of fog in Vista, there has been (

With the "so long as you're not using Vista" line, I was more referring to the lack of fog (since the OP specifically mentioned it).

I'm not interested in vista as this will be a specific Dark Engine box, I have Windows 7/XP on my main rig. I knew about DDFix but did not know about the SS2Tool, thanks for the info guys. My understanding with DDFix, you can get fog now with DX9 or lower hardware in XP on both ATI and nVidia so I guess that's what I'll try.

Fog works only with the later DX6 version of DDfix (1.2.0 onwards). The earlier DX9 version (latest is 1.1.1) doesn't support fog but it runs much better. DX6 version gets heavy on complex missions, especially on low end rig like you are building.

Sorry to bump my own post but thought I'd share what I ended up building for my Dark Engine PC box. System specs:
Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard
AMD 3700+ 939 CPU (single core)
1 gig of DDR ram
120 gig ATA hard drive
Sound Blaster Live! sound card
EVGA 7900GS PCIe video card
Windows XP Pro
KDS XFlat 19" CTR (have to have good blacks)
Fog / sky work because of DDFix and Mission X ran great. Now to start up Thief 2X, as I never finished it after it released.

It was especially noticeable on ATI cards until recently, even 3870 couldn't run T2 missions via DX6 ddfixes with passable speed. But recently I tried new Catalyst and ATI apparently fixed problems with speed in older games - no more slowdowns, so now DX6 ddfixes work full speed on ATI cards too.

System specs:
1 gig of DDR ram.
I would double that, 1Gb is fine if your just doing internet and office, but games prefer it if you have 2GB of mem and seeing how cheap memory is now you have no reason not too.

Thief doesn't require 2 gigs of ram, biker.:p (unless he's planning to play modern games as well on this box)
