I got an HP netbook recently and some low spec games have inconsistent framerates. All I use it for is classes for my job, a few classic games and movies. It was cheap and has pretty good battery life so I can take it in the field without worry.
What is the best operating for a netbook? Would it be worth installing XP or not much difference between Windows 7? I've even heard of a Linux based OS made specifically for netbook, but I don't know how well it would support the games I want to put on it.

What model? It probably just sucks. All netbooks suck.

XP, without a doubt. The RAM requirements of 7 are too high for most notebooks (and when I say requirements I don't mean stated specs, I mean how much RAM you have to spare to do anything). If you can stand to not game on it, then kubuntu is a solid choice - it has a netbook theme that cuts down on effects etc. Lunix is definitely the better choice for desktop stuff, but XP will let you play old games and stuff with ease.

As for optimisation, there is a bootleg XP out there called XP Pro Performance edition. You can put your serial in - it would be legit in that respect but it isn't distributed in the mainstream marketplace if you catch my drift

I'd also recommend Linux for your netbook, but I wouldn't really suggest running KDE on that sort of device. I'm a fan of Xfce, myself. Personally running ArchLinux on my netbook, but that's a bit of work getting set up. Xubuntu is a fairly good setup; I'd recommend that.

Yeah xfce would be good for performance but it is pretty spartan and sterile tbqh. Might as well install any distro and then stick ratpoison and vimperator onto it. You'll never need a mouse again!
I was thinking another idea would be to dual-boot if you have the space. Most new netbooks would have ample space for a couple of systems

I have an XP netbook. I also have a Windows 7 upgrade, but I can't bring myself to do it. I would never run DX10 programs on the thing and the upgrade would be put to better use on some other machine. I would avoid using Linux on the netbook. To be blunt, it just aint worth it. The graphics drivers are worthless. They provide about 60% of the speed for Quake III that the Windows ones do. Also, playing Youtube videos full-screen is a joke under Linux unless you have a decent GPU (which most netbooks don't). The netbook came with XP and it will probably continue to run XP long after XP is EOL'd.

Lol. QFT.
I hate netbooks. Laptop or tablet, not some inbetween low powered nonsense that does half the job.
But I digress...

My ideal portable machine would be a computer the size and form factor of a GBA SP. I don't even care if it isn't X86, as long as it has a keyboard and external ports with a GPU capable of Quake3 graphics.
