I was gonna list Scots Taffer here but goddammit he just forked out another instant hit. Keep'em coming, I say.

No they didn't.
I was going to point this out earlier, but I was worried I was coming over as the Chart Police or something.
PS: EvaUnit02, OMC stands (or rather, stood) for Otara
Millionaires Club.

Don't think they even had two #1s here, though they did have at least one other song released. HB was the largest selling single ever by a New Zealander which, much like being Kenya's greatest downhill skier, is at least some achievement, as was it making me want to bash my skull open against any handy hardened object after hearing it for just the second time.

That was irony because Otara is about the poorest suburb in Auckland. It's now irony because Mr Fuimana is bankrupt.

Yeah- HS are nothing to write home about, but they had some pretty catchy songs, now that I'm going back and listening to them a bit. New Girl Now is one of those "sleeper" hits that people recognize but don't expect to hear in a club, so that's always cool.
I haven't listened to Argent very consistently, but there's clearly some good prog stuff going on there, even if you listen closely to Hold Your Head Up. Which album would you recommend? There are several bands that are not really in the "prog" camp but have those tendencies and I really like most of them - King's X, Winger (post-2002), Jellyfish, Galactic Cowboys, etc.
Argent started out more mellow but became more prog-rock as they went along. They were actually a continuation of the band The Zombies, who did Time of the Season and She's Not There (among others.)
In my opinion, the best Argent albums are the first one, called Argent, and the last one called Nexus. To me, the one that had Hold Your Head Up on it is actually the worst one of the bunch. Your level of prog-rockiness though would determine which style you'd like better. The later style is much better produced, and is nearing the over-the-topness that kind of ruled the genre in the mid 70s.
For comparison,
This is a song from the first album:

Can't believe it's page 4 and nobody's mentioned Los del Rio and Macarena.
Oh, wait. I forgot we're talking about the "best". But still...

I never liked Hold Your Head Up that much, but thanks for the link to Music From the Sphere. I had no idea Argent did prog. Is the rest of Nexus like that?

Definitely dig the latter song, and the early one's not bad either - reminds me of classic Yes, but with a lot more groove. I tend toward prog with heavier guitar (DT, Rabin-era Yes, Rush excepting the "keyboard" era), not so much into Genesis, King Crimson, ELP - too "keyboardy" for my taste, but I do appreciate it. I think I'll pick up the last album - thanks for the links!

@fett, you heard any Spock's Beard? They definitely draw a lot of, um, 'inspiration' from classic Yes (though perhaps more inspiration from the wakeman era than you'd like...) Good songs "(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CViap6J_j2U) At the End of the Day" (I like the original studio version much better than this live version, also this song is the most keyboardy of the ones I list...), anything from their first album "The Light".

Yea, the rest is pretty much like that, except for a couple more straight sounding rock songs. The keyboard player wrote most of the prog songs and the guitarplayer wrote the more typical rock songs. I just gave two examples of the prog 'epics' from those respective albums.
