I made a banner for my "Best of 2023" list to post on my "socials".
I thought I'd post it here as well.

https://i.ibb.co/RCmfnsm/best-of-2023-sm.jpgI thought while I'm at it I should make a new thread so others could give their lists. While we could make a separate thread for best movie, TV show, album or song, game (and indeed we have a dedicated thread for best game in GenGaming, and I even think it's best for people to still post in it for games), etc., I think it's efficient to have one thread at least for people's top picks for different works.
Often I also put my top fiction and non-fiction books up as well, but it's a bit much to go through all the top rated books, and it feels too arbitrary to just elevate the ones that I happened to read. But if you have picks for other things like books or artworks or architecture or anything else, I'd be happy to see it too.

I watched a bit of Reservation Dogs, but it didn't really grab me. Loved The Bear and TLOU. Didn't like Succession.
And I've had a hard time getting my butt to the movies this year, so I feel like I've missed everything cool.
But I did make a (

I saw a bunch of movies and shows in 2023, but there's really nothing I'd like to list as 'best' in terms of an absolute ranking of quality. Barbie and Oppenheimer were both good but flawed (Barbie moreso) in ways that make me want to dismiss them with the words 'good, but...', and I feel like explaining those reservations diminishes my opinion of them even more in retrospect. So they're all honourable mentions, along with: The Holdovers, They Cloned Tyrone, Talk to Me, Rocket Raccoon's Trauma Tape, Across the Spider-verse. That's not even acknowledging I saw some stuff which is more like a sideways thumb - John Wick's Never-ending Stair Fallathon, and Sisu.
I haven't seen Past Lives, though, so you bet that is now on the list. Thanks, dema!
As far as TV shows go, Succession was bloody great, as was The Bear. TLoU had one sterling episode (you know the one), and everything else was... well, sure, it was good. If you haven't played the game three times over like me, it's a good way of experiencing the story. But it is the same story, just with more stuff around it -- and some of the stuff is pretty redundant, like Kathleen.
But you know what? I'm going with Barry. It was a pretty anti-climactic, frustratingly slow, almost self-sabotaging send-off, but it was also exactly where all of this was headed. The trajectory was inevitable: the more you worked out the problem, the more the calculus confirmed there was only ever one solution that everything could converge onto. And it still managed to do that while eviscerating Hollywood from within its own palisade, and maintained the satirical edge it started off with. It is, I contend, the best-directed television show of the past bunch of years, and it's funny, and dark, and biting - and sometimes boring - but always watchable, always a pleasure to see good performers give great performances. Stephen Root and Henry Winkler (hiya, Fonzie!) manage to stand out playing men who don't understand they're ruined individuals until it's just about too late, with both gravity and absurdity. And everyone else in the cast is no slouch either.
Also, the sound direction on this show - watch it on a 5.1 system at the very least, if you can. When there's a scene that shows it off, it is absolutely *chef's kiss*.
