We have a (
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151583) Best Game of 2021 discussion going on in GenGaming. I made a list for everything else (music, movies, tv, & books) and thought to post it here. So here it is...
Best album: Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy & the Voiced Concern, (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkwr82I_lHM)
Also notable: The Other Favorites - Unamericana, (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v-x2___BiA) (especially good for the Jerry Holt Salon crowd and Simon & Garfunkle fans)
---
Best movie: The Power of the Dog
Also Notable: CODA, Drive My Car (probably the closest you can get to creating the vibe of a Murakami novel in a movie), Being the Ricardos, Dune, the new West Side Story, Last Night in Soho, Tick, Tick, Boom!, The Mauritian. Overall, it was kind of a thin year for movies, though. Some of the best movies I saw this year were from 2020: Holler, Minamata, Quo Vadis, Aida, Nomadland.
Best Doc: 76 Days
---
Best TV: Yellowjackets
Also notabe: What We Do in the Shadows S3, The Expanse S6 is also on track to be great
---
Best novel: Kazuo Ishiguro - Klara and the Sun
Also notable: Arkady Martine - A Desolation Called Peace, Andy Weir - Project Hail Mary, and I'm betting James S. A. Corey's Leviathan Falls will be great (They also all turned out to be scifi.)
---
Best non-fiction: Craig Whitlock - The Afghanistan Papers
Also notable: Sheera Frenkel & Cecilia Kang - An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook's Battle for Domination & Simon Chesterman - We, the Robots? The book I had the most fun reading this year was BOOM: Mad Money, Mega Dealers, and the Rise of Contemporary Art, but that came out in 2019.

Never heard of Lil Ugly Mane before, but I'm liking what I'm hearing. Also I don't really get the big whoop about Power Of The Dog. I saw it, it was fine. Was underwhelmed by Dune as well. I just felt like all the things in it were more interesting in the David Lynch one. I usually like Stellan Skarsgård but his baron was nowhere as creepy as the one in the old movie. Felt like he was mostly just used as a prop, getting balooned up into the air and submerged in sludge, without getting much chance to actually act.
ANYWAY
Best Album: I don't listen to entire albums much any more but I guess my fave was (

Best Song: This catchy as hell tune by a couple of disco queens.

I'm looking at lists of best movies this year and finding plenty of things I liked but nothing I really loved, so I dunno.

Picking a best movie was drag because all of the options were underwhelming. I didn't really explain the context of my last sentence, but I had 4 picks right off (Holler, Minamata, Quo Vadis, Aida, Nomadland) until I realized all 4 of them were 2020 movies.
And the other 2021 movies (Dune, the Ricardos one, CODA...), when I really measured them up weren't like that much greater than Power of the Dog, so I just fell back to it because, eh, a Western opera is a Western opera I guess. I won't disagree it was a relatively blah movie.
The one exception might have been Drive My Car, which I said captured the whole Murakami vibe in an evocative way... The thing there is I've been miffed by Japan life recently, so that Murakami vibe was only annoying the hell out of me. So I couldn't let it win just on principle.
