The most surprising best tune of '08 for me would be (

Really warming up to Vampire Weekend here. It's the perfect summer-evening barbeque music; makes me feel all grilled and toasty.

Opeth - Watershed has got a couple of good tracks.
Juno Reactor - Gods and Monsters have been a mild disappointment for me, Pretty Girl is about as far from prog trance as you can get.
Nick Cave - Dig Lazarus Dig!!! is truly awesome.
LaiBach - Kunst der Fuge is something so huge and epic it can't be described by words.
MSI - If, well, it's just another MSI album, but good fun.
Tiamat - Amanethes is certainly not their best, but good work, anyway.

The only good tracks on Watershed were the bonus tracks.

Vampire Weekend is pretty good but a little bit irritating after a few plays. Largely an exercise in clever swearing.
Blitzen Trapper's "Wild Mountain Nation" is half a good album. The other half isn't.

Another vote for Wolf Parade though.

I found the reverse: irritaing at first, but once you learn the hooks it's kind of addictive.

iTunes gave away their track 'Oxford Comma' a week or two ago - I did indeed find it annoying at first, but its growing on me.

The hipster backlash against Vampire Weekend started two months ago. Didn't you get the memo?
and seriously, who gives a fuck about an 'Oxford Comma'
But yeah, off the top of my head: ASMZ, Wolf Parade, These New Puritans, M83, Neon Neon and Fuck Buttons
