Aja mentioned Fleet Foxes. I bought their cd on the strength of a review in Mojo and it's a revelation. It's steeped in beach boys, CSNY etc but in no way sounds dated. Beautiful songs, gorgeous harmonies.
Just got this one, and it's excellent. It's like a combination of the Beach Boys (who I'm pretty sure you've heard of) and the Avett Brothers (who I'm pretty sure you haven't). Amazing stuff, particularly "White Winter Hymnal"

Lately I've been more aware of the lyrics in the newer songs, and I must say, there are some pretty good lyricists out there right now!
Chasing cars = great lyrics
You-re Beautiful = good lyrics
I really like 'The Postal Service' as well, Amazing lyrics, and the electronic music is very pretty as well.

I strongly disagree on both counts of great lyricism, but the postal service are ok. If we're including older stuff, did anyone get hold of The Dirty Projectors black flag covers album, 'Rise Above'? It's absolutely fantastic. They take the raw pointy fingers of some of BF's best songs and twist them into some of the most gorgeous, intricate folkish rock-music since The Arcade Fire. I've been in love with the entire album every since I got it. I can also say that they're fucking unbelievable live, in their current incarnation.

Actually, I do to... I just heard 'You're Beautiful' and it's definitely not the song I had in mind.
Chasing cars on the other hand, while the lyrics are very typical and dull, they somehow fit the song. I guess it's a pretty dull song though. I enjoy it anyway, for being as mellow as it is.
I do agree with your opinion of the 'Rise Above' cover album, I haven't heard many of the original songs, but I LOVE the vocal work, very abstract at times, and equally melodic. The guitar tone and style reminds me of a band called 'We Versus the Shark'. They're more on the rock side of the rock/folk scale.

"Chasing Cars" always struck me as a massive, anthemic song in search of a massive, anthemic hook to sustain it.
