so what are your favorite cinematic brawls, duels, beat-downs and throwdowns? not necessarily with the best real-world fighters, or the best-choreographed, or even necessarily with fists and feet, but the ones that you liked the most.
* raising arizona, the trailer home brawl- absolutely hilarious, over-the-top-verging-on-looney-tunes wrasslin' match.
* they live, roddy piper and keith david in the alley- in a word, OUCH. MY nuts hurt after watching that.
* goldeneye, brosnan vs bean in the control room- this is maybe the favorite of my favorites. absolutely brutal combat between men trained to win by any means. love it love it love it.
* phantom menace, darth maul vs jedi pansies- only part of the whole fucking movie l liked. even though it was basically just ray park getting in some kicking practice it still rocked.
* rob roy, liam neeson vs tim roth- little bastard could handle a sword, l'll give him that.
* kill bill vol.2, uma thurman vs darryl hannah- can't remember ever seeing a woman get kneed in the crotch. add to that the flying kick through the trailer wall and 'the sword that couldn't be drawn [because the trailer was too small to pull it]' and you have classic violence.
* robin hood- THE REAL ONE , robin hood vs guy of gisbourne- l don't care it was stunt doubles this was immortal. all swordplay should look like this.
* the challenge, scott glenn vs toshiro mifune's evil corporate brother- if you can't beat 'em, staple 'em. you don't need a katana when you have a swingline.
* evil dead 2, ash vs his own hand- it's been about 10 years since l've seen this but l still remember laughing until it hurt.
* it's a mad mad mad mad world, jonathan winters vs the two garage mechanics- ever more dimly remembered but l recall being absolutely paralyzed with laughter.
* monty python and the holy grail, king arthur vs the black knight- this needs no explanation, though the fact that it took so long for me to remember it does. *hangs head in shame*
* aliens, ripley vs the queen- [fuck me, l'm on a roll now] 'get away from her, you BITCH!'. the theater just fucking erupted at this.
* pirates of the caribbean, jack sparrow vs cap'n barbosa- absolutely goddamned brilliant is all.
* blade 2- bloodhunt, blade vs nomak- guillermo del toro taking a little time out from the story to treat us to a little vampire pro wrestling.
have to stop to think of more. l'll leave the martial arts duels for the hong kong cognoscenti to fill in.

Good thread, I love geeking out over stuff like this.
Goldfinger - I love the fight at the start with the assassin and the broad. It's classic Connery Bond and why I love his way of playing the character.
From Russia With Love - Connery and Shaw in the train car.
Goldeneye - Bean and Brosnan had a really good go at this one in the satellite station.
The Matrix - Smith and Neo in the train station, natch.
Star Wars - The Phantom Menace - A threeway lightsabre duel for the first time ever, not only did I love it but it was accompanied by one of the most rousing Star Wars themes ever.
Saving Private Ryan - The struggle over the knife. One of the most painful scenes I've ever seen committed to film.
Kill Bill Vol. 2 - Yes, yes, yes, Uma and Daryl. Fucking awesome conclusion too.
Oldboy - The one-take continuously tracking corridor fight scene.
And only because it was recent:
Serenity - Mal and the Operative fighting by the broadcast centre. There's a real brutality to the fights in the Firefly universe that I think is quite ballsy - plus I know that Nathan Fillion knocks the shit out of himself doing them. (Also particularly excellent was the duel in the Shindig episode).
More will come, I'm sure.
Oh, and for comedy value: Bridget Jones' Diary - fighting has never been so real, girly and hilarious.

Grosse Point Blank - John Cusack fighting Benny The Jet Urquidez by the lockers. Fookin' excellent.
Wheels On Meals - Jackie Chan fighting Benny The Jet Urquidez by the big dining table. Capital!
Memories Of Murder - an absolutely superb Korean detective drama, which features the most realistic bar-brawl scene I've ever witnessed. Regardless, this is an excellent movie which I reccomend to all of you.
Anything in The Magnificent Butcher.
The prize-fighting in Ong Bak.
And whichever Bond film it was where he fought "Bomber" Pat Roach.
There are a few great sword fights in Le Bossu (ridiculously renamed to "On Guard" in the US).

A few random things off the top of my head...
The Princess Bride - Westley vs Inigo Montoya. Best fight scene ever? :)
Drunken Master 2 - Wong Fei-Hong and Fu Wen-Chi vs the Axe Gang. As awesome as the final scenes are, the sheer carnage of this fight makes it my favourite.
The Transporter - A fight inside a bus!? Excellent! :) I couldn't call this a great film by any stretch, but there's some nice creativity on display.
Shanghai Knights - Vastly vastly better fights than its predecessor, although be aware that they then butchered a lot of great footage for time in the theatrical release (watch the deleted scenes on the DVD to see them in full). The fight in the library / treasure room is comedy gold.
Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior - Loads of awesomeness here. I guess I'd pick the main gambling hall fight(s) if I had to choose.

Fuck yeah, the fight scenes in that movie were excellent. I thought the way Cusack took that guy down was cold, desperate and totally realistic.
I also dug the shootout at the end although the TV-through-the-head was a bit cheesy, but funny enough for me not to care.
Rocky IV - So bad it's good, but the Draco and Rocky fight is a real rouser.
Oh yeah, and
King Kong - Kong vs T-Rexes. FLAWLESS VICTORY. thread over.

Bourne Identity - all the fight scenes
The Phantom Menace - the three way fight scene
Revenge of the Sith - Anakin vs. Obi Wan
Matrix - Neo vs. Smith
Grosse Point Blank - as mentioned above
I'm sure I'll think of more before the night is up.

Right on. The only gang of dudes vs. one guy fight that didn't feel like a big circle-jerk of people waiting their turn to get hit.

Yeah, that scene is impressive on so many angles - it's technically brilliant, the choreography is so good that it seems non-existent, the cinematography is exactly as it should be: stark and grainy, and the fight itself is brutal and realistic: he gets beaten, fights back, gets stabbed, knocks the shit out of people with sticks to the face, keeps pummelling through... in fact, I wrote a review about Oldboy for a site once in which I said that fight scene really sums up Odae Su's (or whatever, I forget his name now) entire character - he is the personification of vengeance.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith - The fight scene between Obi-Wan and General Greivous. When Greivous pulled out four lightsabers, that filled me with unending awe, not to mention when he does the rotating thing. Sure, it was cheap, but Obi-Wan still kicked his ass.
