Apart from Command & Conquer and System Shock 2, these games aren't really that old! :)
I think that the "problem" these days is that there are way too many games to choose from. It's the same when you're planning to watch a movie on Netflix or something; sometimes you spend more time trying to decide which movie to watch than actually watching it. And when you've finished watching the film, there are thousands of others that you can choose from, so unless the film is somehow exceptionally good, you'll just forget it and move on to the next one. Back in the day renting a film wasn't so easy, and because you actually had to go through some trouble to watch one, you would pay more attention to it and perhaps even watch it more than once before returning it. That little extra inconvenience is why music sounds "better" on vinyl, and that applies to other things as well, including games. Digitalisation has made games cheaper and much easier to acquire, but I think it has also changed the way we play games (and the way how games are designed).
Anyway, I'm good at ignoring questions. :D I just find it more difficult to get "attached" to games, music or films nowadays. I can't even remember the last time I played any game for a second time after finishing it. I have hundreds of unplayed games in my library, so I prefer shorter games, ones that don't take too long to finish so that I can move on to the next game.
Maybe I'm just getting old too.

I think it is part of the aging process.. I am more and more disappointed by the incomplete "mess" some games are released in, that I have almost ZERO desire to purchase anything on release date anymore. And pre-order anything, oh f*c* no!!! I am done with that.
But, something like the next Star Wars game (Survivor, I think), I will probably be all over it ... soon after release, maybe? Most likely, however, it will be once it hits its first sale. And have you seen the trailer for Eclipse?!?! OMFG, that looks incredible. I'll probably get that one on release date, but I'll still be hesitant to do it. Things just get rushed out the door unfinished that it's not even funny or worth my time to fool with them. I'd rather get them in the Game of the Year formats with all DLC and the most stuff I can for the buck.
I have recently replayed the Tomb Raider (new trilogy) and love those games. I usually quit in Shadow about the time I get to the hub part; I just don't care for that aspect of the game. Recently replayed Shadow of Mordor; one of my favorite games of all time, and it's just as good as I remember it.
Same for AC Origins and Odyssey: I have spent over a thousand hours in those two games, combined. Love me some Far Cry (mainly 2, which is my fave, then 3 then 4... 5 I will replay - one day - it's my least favorite; never played or probably will, #6).
Dishonored 1 & 2 and DLCs will get put into my yearly rotation (or more) as well. Same for the Batman Arkham games, Asylum, City, Origins, Knight. Although Knight gets played maybe once every 4 or 5 times I play the others. There are so many Greats that it's hard to recall all of them: Driver: San Francisco, some of the Need For Speed games, GTA V... Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3...
The point of this ramble? There are just so few games that come out anymore that I'm excited about. There are rare exceptions, but I'm happy replaying the Greats from the last few decades that I don't really need new games at this point in my life. I recently reinstalled Thief 2 again, started playing my favorite FMs.. some that I missed.. and then decided to open Dromed. After staring at my (very) partially completed FM from 16 years ago that I started, I slowly (after about 6 different staring-at-the-screen sessions) started laying some brush work in various areas, started on a whole new area, started thinking that I might want to incorporate parts of some others (but those were lost!)...
I'm happily (haha, right! :cheeky: ) lost in the BSP again. For the time being. Can I hang with it? Who the hell knows. But it's fun, for the time being, and has brought back a ton of old, fond memories.
PS: Thanks for putting that Command & Conquer idea in my head, Daljord. I probably played that game 3000 hrs back in the day. Not sure if I could re-pick it back up at this point in my life, but I recently found it on Origin and I thought how nice it would be to play that gem again.
But the time I have enough free time to play anything, I'm perfectly happy replaying old titles; by that time, I've forgotten 90% of them anyway. :p

This year I spent more time replaying Sable than getting into any new game, and of course sims (DCS, MSFS, ATS, Dakar 18, Arma3/Antistasi). I replay Mirror's Edge a lot, and Subnautica is also on that list.
I listed Stray as my favorite game of the last year, but I was really conscious that it was made for a very different gaming culture, and even as "best game of the year" for me, I still wouldn't put it in the top 10 or even 20 of all time classics. And then it only goes down from there; if that says anything about my feeling about contemporary games. Even Sable, my favorite game for a long time, it's still playing to a very different culture than me, but I just replay it to cruise around and climb things.

Hi Eivind, you're not alone in gravitating back to games you enjoy rather than keeping up with the latest. It's how this site came to be and what keeps it going. A big part of it, for me at least, is knowing the satisfaction I know I'm going to get from a game I already love, and weighing that against the appeal of something new and the risk of not liking it. I've become super picky, like I was when I was a kid, where two months worth of mowing the lawn and trimming the landscaping would pay for a single C64 game, so it had better be good. Now, money is not the limit but time is.
I've been playing Flight Simulator since I was a kid in the mid-80s. I still have the original C64 floppy and fired it up recently over the holiday break. I switched to X-Plane for a while, but came back to Flight Simulator again after the 2020 version came out. There's a few other sims that I keep coming back to, mostly casual ones like Dirt 5 and SSX 3. I don't really do base/city/empire building sims anymore, they're too much of a time suck.
I'm a huge Deus Ex fan, so at any given time, I have usually have some game or mod from the franchise in a partial state of completeness waiting for me to get back to it. In 2022, it was Mankind Divided, which turned out to be a lot more enjoyable the second time, so I ended up putting over 100 hours into it last year. I'm back at DX again now with a popular total conversion mod that's getting a makeover. System Shock 2 is right up there as well. It gets a full replay every few years and I'm still trying out different PSI powers and build options. I've gotten away from Shock 1, but that will change if Night Dive ever finishes the remake. I've also gotten away from Thief. The Dark Mod is still awesome, but I got bored with the setting and lore. Likewise, I love the Dishonored games, but I don't feel any desire to revisit them. I'd like to play Prey again though.
I've also been feeling burned out on open world RPGs lately. I gave up CP2077. And Outer Worlds. And before that, Witcher 3. Fallout: New Vegas was probably the last one I enjoyed. I enjoyed Mass Effect starting out, but by the end of ME3 I had enough. And I haven't really enjoyed a traditional FPS since the end of the HL2 franchise. Like I said, I'm picky I guess. - Dave

Mass Effect: Andromeda was really good to me. Not as good as ME2, but still close up there.
I liked the DX games, but never really had a desire to revisit them..
FS1.0 on the C64.. man, that was painful. But I spent 1000s of hours in it as well back in the 80's. Same for MSFSX. Never got the newest 2020 version tho. I've heard mixed things about it.

Actually, it was Flight Simulator II. I've got a bunch of scenery disks for it too. I think the original game was only on the Apple II.
Microsoft's latest wins on graphics and accessibility, but X-Plane has more third party and user content aimed at more serious simulation.
In 2017, I just wasn't looking forward to another Mass Effect game yet. I recall reading mixed opinions too, but the consensus now is generally favorable. I might give it a try. The worlds sure look pretty.

I know a lot of the negatives mentioned about it were related to launch or just post-launch with major bugs, performance issues, etc. I never encountered any of those during my playthrough of it, and I had to admit that it was a lot better than I expected. It really brought back some memories of the whole ME franchise. It was really good imo.

Oh dang, all this time I've been under the misassumption that 1.0 was on C64. Thanks for clearing that up, I feel like such a dufus. You're right, MSFS II in 1984 is the one I was thinking about. I never even knew scenery disks existed for it. It wasn't until I got MSFSX that I discovered all the add-ons for it. I'm a big fan of ORBX's stuff, but there are so many available, and plane add-ons.. I just don't know if FS2020 will ever compete. Maybe they will. Maybe the core game is sufficiently advanced to make it worthwhile.. But, I have several hundred dollars invested in add-ons for MSFSX, so it will be hard for me to abandon it.
heywood on 25/1/2023 at 19:06
I know what you mean, I haven't really invested much in FS2020 because I already had X-Plane. I'm still just globetrotting around in FS2020 enjoying the scenery.
demagogue on 26/1/2023 at 02:40
The scenery in FS2020 can be really stunning at times, when it's on it feels photo-real. But there is still a lot of wonk in a lot of places too that are probably even worse than the older incarnation. But that's steadily improving over time, as are the content and addons, etc. But I don't know if I'd say the core game is all that advanced. I don't know. I didn't play MSFSX so I can't compare it; and I don't really spend much time doing the challenges or addon missions, anyway. I'll usually just pick a region I'm curious to see and make my own flight path. I'm really happy with it, but I can understand the logic of sticking with what you've got if gameplay is what you're looking for.
