Believe it or not, not everyone shares the same definition of 'best'.
I'm not forcing my opinions upon anyone, i just said that for ME it's hard to understand why this movie is even discussed here. If you think it's one of the best foreign movies, ok, good for you.
Not all foregin movies are strange art movies btw, i have a hard time believing you really see much foreign movies at all if you rank this movie that high? You totaly sure you don't like it just to be... "alternative" and stuff? ;) Whatever, each to his own i guess.

I don't follow you, I'm just saying that you shouldn't judge a film's quality by its country of origin; nothing more, nothing less.
Vurt: sorry, it came across a bit rude, wasn't intentional.

And no one here has done that in any way.
If you're going to read implication into the thread, how about this? Films in a language than your mother tongue are less likely to have cropped up on your radar because they get less coverage than 'native' films; therefore you're more likely to have missed the good films in other languages. Threads like this can bring up gems that have passed you by so far due to the language thing.

Can I recommend
Girls' Rebel Force Of Competitive Swimmers instead? It covers essentially the same themes, but does so in a much more satisfying way.
You probably think I'm joking.Ulukai, your google-fu is strong indeed! Ajare, I've just read a review of this film and now wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Life is Beautiful (I actually think this is a bit hit-and-miss but it's one of
those touchstones of modern culture in many ways, certainly necessary viewing)
I disagree... La Vita è Bella is 100% hit, one of my absolute favorites! :thumb:
I'll also jump on the bandwagon with:
* Amélie
* Pan's Labyrinth
* El Mariachi
But, one I haven't seen mentioned is
(http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0108500/) Les Visiteurs. Jean Reno & Christian Clavier... funny as hell (I only wish I spoke French, because I
know I'm not getting the full effect relying on the subtitle translations). There was an American version made in 2001 with Christina Applegate, called
(http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0189192/) Just Visiting... higher budget, better special effects, but not nearly as funny. Though it does have some of its own crack-up moments. ;)

My list is kind of short, I generally don't have the time or money to go hunting for the more obscure foreign films (except in the case of some anime), but here are mine:
* Zatoichi - Any of them. I just love the character, he's funny, blind, and one hell of a swordsman.
* Pan's Labyrinth - Another slightly obvious one, still a damn good movie.
* The Host - Slightly (?) obscure Korean monster movie, pretty good movie. They actually show you the monster, too, unlike some other monster movies.

It's a bloody chore seeing foreign language movies at home, 'cause the moment I put something like Pan's Labyrinth on, the scene goes like this:
Roomie: Subtitles!? Aw crap.
Me: What? You liked Irreversible, and it had subtitles.
Roomie: Um, in a movie that had Monica Belucci naked, you thought I was paying attention to the subtitles?
Roomie's fiancé: *gives searing Roomie a searing look, but then realises something* Wait, this movie isn't in English?
Me: No, but it's one of the best films made this y...
Roomie's fiancé: But I thought it was in English. *pouts*
2nd Roomie: Another weird foreign movie? Dude, I can't have dinner and read a friggin' movie!
Mutual Friend walks in: Hey, I just got the latest Rob Schneider flick, and it's *funny*!
Everybody Else: Yay! No subtitles! Let's watch it!
Me: *headdesk*
Anyway, here's a very incomplete list:
* Lola Rennt - or Run Lola Run, as it's more popularly known.
* Seven Samurai - one of Akira Kurosawa's finest.
* Shaolin Soccer/Kung Fu Hustle - both are ridiculously funny, and ridiculously well-made, and you owe it to yourself to see 'em.
* Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon
* Grave of the Fireflies - forget that this is anime, it's one of the most affecting, depressing movies I've ever seen in my lifetime, and I've seen Requiem for a Dream.
* Spirited Away - also anime, but again it's one of the best movies I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
* Cidade de Deus
* The Devil's Backbone - if you liked the themes in Pan's Labyrinth, you really ought to watch this.
* The Orphanage - Simply brilliant. And yes Scots, you really do need to watch it.
