As for Fellini, never seen a single movie of his. Probably because I have him pingeonholed in my head as high-brow/arthouse cinema, which I must profess to not being a huge fan (in my limited exposure). Mainly due to laziness, I don't enjoy searching for meaning in mediums unless I'm already engaged somehow.
The great thing I have found with Fellini films is that they engage you emotionally rather than intellectually. You're not supposed to sit there and try and piece all the scenes together into some kind of narrative. Sure thinking is required but what you feel during a scene is often the real meaning of it. I would urge you to see '8 1/2', 'La Dolca Vita', 'Armachord' and 'La Strada'. 'La Strada' is probably the best place to start as it is just a straight film unlike the others. It is also a very very good one.

Peter Sellers in almost anything, but particularly Dr Strangelove.
Yeah he is brilliant in that film but I actually found George C Scott to be even better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuT3pFG06K8) Tom Cruise in Magnolia - the scene where he's being interviewed and she asks him about his mother. He just keeps on playing the toughguy-role but you can tell from the expression on his face that she's tearing up old wounds.
I'm glad I'm not the first person in this thread to mention Tom Cruise in Magnolia. He is great throughout, especially the scene you mentioned and when he is at the bedside. the whole cast is great, especially philip seymour hoffman and john c reilly. the only one i don't like is julianne moore.
paul thomas anderson is a great director.

Several scenes from Glory.
To me the most emotional scene had no words at all. Denzel had made such an eloquent point about never carrying a flag that had heaped such cruelty on his people earlier but in the end when Broderick fell he picked it up and continued forward. Such an easy thing to miss but so very meaningful.

Where's all the De-Niro-Deer-Hunter love?
Also, it's not a well-known film, but I thought (

Heres another fantastic scene. This one from 'Chinatown'. If you've seen the film you'll know what scene but if you haven't don't watch as it contains
major spoilers. Just go rent the film instead because it really is a classic. For me it's one of, it not, the best film of the 70's.

one of my fave movie scenes - a Jeff Bridges brilliancy
too bad one has to endure 110+ minutes of craptacular celluloid to appreciate the impact of this five star moment

Donnie Brasco- Pacino's final scene in the film where he's just sitting in his room and takes of his watch and ring knowing he's about to be offed was a very nice piece of acting.
The final Russian Roulette Scene from Deer Hunter with Walken and De Niro was amazing.
Finally from The Thin Red Line I thought all of James Caviezel's monologues throughout that film were brilliant.

Al Pacino in ScarFace; that final gun battle at the end. "You mess with me ,You mess with the best, I'M TONY MONTANA". All these bullets are hitting him and he is still standing there yelling; then that final shot in the back; down he goes:eek:
