That cyclical thing may sound soothing (and a bit worldly wise) but I don't buy it. Especially because it sounds like we can just sit this out. And we've seen how well this worked with the Brexit, with Trump's election, with tonight's vote in Turkey to drop parliamentary democracy for a presidential system. Next up is the French election. This isn't going to just swing back by itself.

Marine Le Pen can't be elected president. It's mathematically impossible. It doesn't matter if her program is left wing, if she's a woman, or if her main advisor is gay, as long as she's called Le Pen, and as long as her party is called Front National, it won't happen. Hell, she could become a transgender muslim and kill her own father and still, she wouldn't stand a chance.
People have developed pavlovian reflexes when it comes to her. Just the mention of her name or anything vaguely related to her is enough to instill fear and disgust in the general population. It's like she has a contagious disease and nobody wants to risk getting infected. Just look at the reactions in this thread. Look at your own reaction OP.
When it comes to politics people really have a very short memory for some reason. People seem to have forgotten the 2002 presidential election. The media warned us: the darkest hours of our history had returned, fascism was back and there would be nothing to stop it. In the end, it was stopped by 80% of the population. Not 51%, not 52%, 80 fucking %. That's the kind of result you get in a banana republic.
More recently we had the regional elections in 2015, which people seem to have blacked out from their memory as well. Marine Le Pen was more popular than ever, the media told us, it was gonna be a landslide victory, they said, she was gonna win most of the regions and the country would descend in a new era of fascism. She got precisely 0 regions. Not 1, not 2, 0.
No, you can rest easy OP, Mélanchon, our next president, will be very accomodating to minorities of all kinds. Sure, first he's gonna leave the EU by staying in it, and he's gonna renegotiate the EU treaties by shouting very loudly. But after that, everything will be back to normal. Six months and a 100-million-euro fine later, he'll scrupulously apply the EU Broad Economic Policy Guidelines which will make him as hated as François Hollande. We'll have daily protests, we'll be bombing the shit out of Syria and we'll have an indefinitely renewed state of emergency. Oh and a brand new constitution, because why not. Democracy will be safe.

I'm not saying it's a cyclical thing exactly, nor am I saying that everything will eventually normalize. But there is something of a rough, slightly predicable pattern things tend to take, especially here in the US.
It seems to me that once you're so many generations removed from trying times, when you've had so many peaceful years buffering us those hard lessons learned, we eventually start taking it all for granted. Eventually, something comes along that makes us question the notion of our own invincibility, and we inevitably react poorly to it.
The most tragic thing about it is that we all know how it's going to end. We have, in our short history, probably garnered a couple dozen anti-immigrant isolationist movements that have netted us nothing but pointless pain and strife. What we're seeing now isn't a new thing. Even the reasons why are about the same. There have been thousands, maybe millions of people like Krush making the same hateful excuses to justify whatever idiot stance they believe will save the country. Oh, they're all animals. They don't live like us. They don't respect our way of life. They're taking our jobs and ruining our economy. We must do something before it's too late!
Who are we jerking our knees at today? The Jews? The Irish? The Polish? Nope. Today, it's the Muslims and the Mexicans.
...and if we let things get out of hand, we'll be telling our great grandkids about the registries and the border riots.

Stop trying to paint France into what it's not. The destabilization of the Middle-East and the killing of millions of Muslims starting from the beginning of the 90s, that's the work of the US and nobody else. Admittedly I haven't studied mathematics since I was 14, however I do know what a mathematic impossibility is, and a candidate being elected in an election in which they are standing is not one of them.
