On another note, reading a bit about the history of the early days of the space race, US response to the successfull launch of Sputnik 1 was the creation of ARPA (later DARPA) - which in turn formed the root of what is now the innerwebs :p
It still amazes me how all is connected... (still listening to Sputniks beeping in a loop)

I suppose 'beep' 'beep' 'beep' is also the BBC edited version of what the US officials were saying when they heard about Sputnik.
