My wife and I are making a trip to my homeland (my father's father is from Sicily) this March. I'm very excited as the only place I've been out of the US is Mexico. We will be staying in Cefalu and Taormina and we'll be in Sicily a total of 7 days. My wife has lots planned, I'll be mostly interested in the food but I'd love to hear of any experiences in Sicily. Have you ever been? Tell us about it.

As long as you keep it in your pants, and don't go look around others people women, holding their hands etc, you won't be forced to marry them.
And if you see a crime, you saw nothing, nothing at all.
Unless you want cement shoes.
Just mind your own business.
Anyway some friends went there on a cruiser and nothing bad happened to them.

Man's been to Mexico and made it out fine, trust me, Sicily's a cakewalk compared, so he'll do fine.
(But do keep it in your pants...no shotgun weddings, plz).
Went to Sicily the year before last year on a cruise, very lovely place, very lovely women, may post some pictures later on :)
Also, no eating in tourist traps...look where the locals munch down.

What Duck said about food. Anywhere in Italy, you want to find the most decrepit, unsanitary looking hole in walls to eat. Preferably these places won't even have a sign outside. Be sure to take in the local markets - especially good if you can find some that aren't in big cities where they hoc tourist fare.

That's good advice for anywhere. Always avoid the places that scream familiarity. You might as well go eat at the fucking Olive Garden, followed by a day of shopping at the mall.
While in Santa Fe a couple years ago, we went to a "renowned" eatery for "New Mexican fare", one of the places touted highly in the local paper--it was nothing but homogenized tourist crap that cost me damn near $12 a plate, not including a drink.
Outside, in the town-square, was a little kiosk run by a father and son (couple of Native Americans), serving up grub on paper plates. It was the BEST goddamn food I've ever eaten--and only cost about $4.00 per plate, including some homemade lemonade.

Uh dudes, I think he'll keep it in his pants or perhaps his wife's pants.
Ask local hotel staff and such where is someplace they like to eat. Make friends and gather intelligence about their favorite places. Also, even if you do not like seafood, you must try some seafood while you're there. Sea urchin is great there I hear.

Been to Sicily?
Yes.
Remember any of it?
I'm claiming heat-induced amnesia. Christ, it was 40 odd fucking degrees.

What I remember of Palermo are the women, the architecture, the look of old (and dirty), the beaches, sadly, didn't had the chance to sit down and have a hearty Sicilian meal, since our boat docked for half a day.
And we went on a guided tour*
* I respect the pragmatic use of a tour for a 1st-timer, but sometimes I just want to lose myself a bit...my idea of a great trip is good company, good destinations and time to explore.

To be fair, I was coming off the tail end of a wild (and my only ever) food poisoning incident, so I wasn't at 100% capacity. I'll chat to my wife about it tonight and glean some knowledge from photos and the like to see if it stirs some memories.
I remember it was fucking pricey.
