Narziss and Goldmund by Herman Hesse. My personal favourite novel by Hesse, as the combination of his ability to wax lyrical about nature, combined with his examination of how one should lead their life makes for an incredibly satisfying read. Sidartha comes a close second for me.
Seconded! There have been times when I thought the whole world would be a lot better off if everyone read this book. Hesse's collections of short stories are fantastic as well, I have Pictor's Metamorphosis.
Richard Hughes' -
A High Wind in Jamaica was so amazing that I went out and found whatever used copies of it I could to give to my friends. Maybe Hughe's has a larger reputation in England, but he seems grossly underappreciated. I've never read a book that so elegantly portrayed children and what it's like to be a child.
Thomas Mann -
The Magic Mountain is also one of my favorites.
Also, any of Knut Hamsun's novels are mind-boggling, Hunger, Pan, and I also just found a collection of short stories of his, and every single one of them was amazing. Somehow, I'm reminded of Larry David in his voice.
