Ok, but my main question remains...does the series become more sci-fi and less soap in 2.5? Someone told me it got better but I'm not sure I trust their judgement.

define "more sci-fi and less soap." If you're asking does it move away from the politics, and more towards the deep space shooty blam blam 'splode, then no, not really. (Season 3 ought to have a fair amount more of that, but to understand why, you've got to watch the rest of season 2.)
The thing is, THIS Battlestar Galactica series was never so much about the shooting of evil robots and space battles and such, as it is about the human conflicts that would naturally arise amongst a really quite small group of people after the end of civilisation. Season 2 has more of the soap opera stuff because this is the second year that these people have had to live with the possibility that they may well be the last generation of humankind, so a sort of malaise has set in, and the structure that everyone has been struggling to keep in place is cracking.

2.5 has some of my favourite episodes...
The Adama vs Cain conflict escalating, Viper pilot episode, "meanwhile in Caprica" episode and of course the absolutely awesome two parter finale where all the errant plotlines get tied up. Not gonna spoil that but let's just say the whole bit after Baltar takes a nap on the desk must be the greatest thing ever. :thumb:
Some of the standalone episodes kinda fall flat, tho. The black market, bar incident and the one where Pegasus loses two Raptors.

2.5 was the best yet. Way more science fictiony than the previous seasons. Galactica is at its best when they're in space and not so much on planets. Personally I couldn't WAIT for the whole Caprica thing to end. Sadly, it sounds like season 3 will be BOOORING.
They were going to cram all of the loose ends from season 1 into the first episode of season 2, the resolution of the cliff hanger. But they decided there was way too much to resolve in a single episode so they decided to do a kind of season 1.5, spreading everything out over the first half. Season 2.5 is what they consider the "true" season 2.
According to the commentaries.

I wasn't complaining about lack of battles - I don't mind the battles, though my dad hates action stuff. And I don't mind drama, as long as it feels GENUINE - the plot threads in season 2 stretched the lines of believability way too far and were very heavy-handed, constant ruminations on the same thing, and all the characters acting like idiots. Adama the Younger is a 5 year old, Starbuck...well, to theri credit she matured some and her character is to be immature...Adama the Older kind of got...boring? His character didn't develop at all other then the "look at me, I've gone batshit crazy" aspect. The doctor sort of mysteriously sunk into the background...
I don't know how to put it. It's not that I minded the drama or the invidiual plotthreads or the ideas - it was the time. They kept having half-hour plotlines in hour shows, so it was always stretched out and repetitive.
Realize it's been a little bit since I watched season 2 and even longer since I saw season 1 so my memory is fuzzy - I guess it's just that season 1 had lots of variety (politics/religeon/comedy/action/post-apocalyptic/porn) wheras season 2 was more like (things go to hell/things go more to hell/things go more to hell/pregnancy/things go more to hell/did we remember to tell you that Tye was an alcoholic/things go more to hell/haha see humans are prejudice against cylons, it's a racial allegory!).
Ok, I know I'm explaining myself poorly - memory is too fuzzy. I guess my basic question is: IS IT DIFFERENT. Season 2 was significantly different from season 1. Is season 2.5 significantly different or is it basically the same as season 2?

What in the hell is all this 2.5 season bullcrap? There was the FIRST season, then the SECOND season.
We await the THIRD season to begin later this year.
Or am i missing something fundamental here...

The second season, from what I can gather, would have had a normal Fall run, but Sci-Fi made them take a couple months break (for advertisment purposes), resulting in the 8 or so episodes that aired in the spring. Thus, Season 2.5.*
* or something similiar.

Any idea when/if season 2 will come out as a single collection? I wouldn't want to buy BSG 2.0 and 2.5 only to find that half a month later they announce a superduper, packed-with-extras BSG Season 2 (complete).
