I'm surprised that I couldn't find one that already exists.
I rented the Battlestar Galactica miniseries on DVD yesterday, after having my interest perked by some features on scifi.com (that I found while looking at Hitchhiker goodness)… I had seen bits and parts of it on TV before now, and always thought it looked interesting, so I viewed.
It made me giddy. I enjoy few movies as well as I enjoyed those three or so hours of Battlestar bliss.
I had seen the original series (in reruns of course) ages and ages ago on Scifi channel back when it played back to back with Buck Rogers. It was the level of bad that was fun to watch in order to make fun of, but the only thing I remembered about it were the names Starbuck, Apollo, and that there was this putrid boy genius character who was even more hate-able than Wesley Crusher. (Buck Rogers on the other hand was so bad that it made my physically ill.)
But yes, giddy, gleeful, excited and inspired. Wow.
Somehow, someday, someway I am going to have to get my hands on the series when it starts coming out on DVD by season (I don’t own a TV).
Who’s seen it? Speak! I require discussion!
Oh, and to put things into (my) perspective:
TNG: Cheesy, but important.
DS9: Best Trek Ever, on par with Trek6.
Voyager: Enjoyable, but stupid
Ent: Vomit
B5: Pure Joy
Firefly: A beautiful gift to scifi fans
Farscape: Rarely saw, but liked when I did
Andromeda: Puke
Stargate: People watch this crap?
Earth Final Conflict: Great 1st season, crap after that

You need to watch more of it.

I was not a scifi fan
until Firefly. (September come ON already) I just can't... stand... Star Trek... (And therefore avoid anything that even remotely resembles it. Probably my loss, but I could care less)
Edit - Well you know, that kind of scifi. Solyaris and films like that, I have always loved.

Yeah, yeah.
I was thinking of starting a thread like this.
I was/am a hardcore original Battlestar fan. I have hated just about everything that has come out of the sci-fi channel with a passion, especially their remakes.
Nevertheless I am enjoying the new Battlestar. The miniseries was better than the series (so far) I think, but it hasn't gone downhill too much.
I have gotten over the fact that they have changed the coolest characters genders (cough Starbuck, cough Boomer), overall they are not too bad, although Starbuck is somewhat grating. I have been very pleased with Crag-Face Calculus Teacher as Adama, quite pleased. Their choice of Baltar was quite good. I like the commanding officer, but I wish they would give him a bigger role - he has been pretty absent so far. I think the show is a little over-sexualized to the point where it is just kind of dumb ("oh look, they're at it again. Time to warm up some soup")
It has had some interesting developments dealing with Cylons, some which don't make sense (yet), but I won't discuss them since they would spoil it for you.
I'd definitely buy the DVD. It is the first series in quite a while that I have remembered to watch every week. (That and the five episodes of Island at War on Masterpiece Theatre)

I've only seen a couple of episodes of the new Battlestar, but I was pleasently surprised. From my brief look, it seems like really decent stuff.
Firefly on the other hand, I have just recently had the pleasure of watching in its entirety (save for the upcoming movie "Serenity", of course, YAY!), and I can't say enough good things about it. You never know what the heck to expect from an episode, either... there's drama, genuine roll-on-the-floor hilarity, and some pretty dark stuff as well. It's criminal that it was cancelled. Fingers/toes/everything crossed that the movie manages to kick-start the series again.

I was leary of the gender change at first but after watching the mini-series I have no problems with Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck, I think she has the character nailed down quite well. And you'd think she must have watched hours of Dirk Benedict in the original series but based on an interview I read she hasn't watched all that much of the original series. :wot:
As for Boomer I don't even remember much about the character from the original series other than being male and black so that was really a non issue for me.
I think you can blame shows like ST: Voyager for the sex, it seems like ever since they introduced Seven of Nine every season had to have the obligatory oversexed episode and this tradition continued with Enterprise. So I guess BG had to have it's siren as well in the form of Tricia Helfer but I believe her place is more justified. What better person to seduce a serial horndog like Gaius Baltar than a blonde bombshell and it's pretty clear that's part of how she keeps him under control for the rest of the season. :cheeky:

Great, albeit often very strange, series.

I think you'd have to blame the original Star Trek - Kirk slept with just about everything.

It's kind of sad that my favorite sci-fi show is an anime...not because I prefer anime, but I just have yet to find an American sci-fi show I really like. My dad loves Next Generation and I grew up with it, and I respect it as a series but unfortunately I missed most of the good episodes and never really got into it.
My dad did express interest in the Battlestar Galatica miniseries so we can rent that sometime but he's lazy in finishing series- I still need to finish Tanner '88, In Living Color season 2 and other things.

The new Galactica series is great. Like many "fans" of the original, I was a bit put off when I read Starbuck was going to be a woman, but the character is really working far better than I could've hoped for. The Caprica storyline seems a bit superfluous, but not enough to really detract from the real story. And I, for one, love the Baltar/Cylon interactions - the two actors play off each other perfectly, their scenes are some of the show's most intense. I'm hooked.

Firefly was unwatchable in the uk, as it was shown in random order, and didn't make any sense.
They showed the last two first, the first one somewhere in the middle, and the second one last.
The cylons in the new miniseries were confusing, as you couldn't tell who was a cylon until the end when they mentioned how many of the new advanced cylons there were, and which ones they were.
Although the ships in the new series look better than the old ones.
