I´m totally new to MW, so I have some questions:
I decided to play a battlemage, dark elf.
I´m still lvl 1.
So:
1.What kind of spells to use?
2.I´m almost never hitting my opponents in melee (I have to slash 5-10 times until I finally hit), is that normal?
3.I joined the mage guild in Balmora, and I´m assigned to a task in an elf stronghold.
I really can´t beat up those folks there, not by using melee, neither summoned creatures or fireball etc. Am I yet to weak, or am I doing wrong?
4. I managed to steal soul gems(one worth 60000!!!! gold) in the mages guild. Bad balancing, huh?

I was just were you were weeks ago. I decided for my character to be a battlemage so i could get the best of both worlds melee and magic. Mine character is a lv 17 battle mage, breton, wizard of house telvanni. (I know i've really don't have much time to play the game.)
The first thing you have to realize about morrowind is that it is very open ended and somewhat buggy. The main thing you should worry about is doing whatever you want and have fun. Treat it like a D&D roleplay.
As for a battlemage early in the game your melee skills suck but will rise fast. Remember to concentrate on your strengths. Axe, long blade, and heavy armor. Axe is the easiest, with an axe a battlemage should be able to hit at least 1 outa 3 swings. Make sure your not using a shortblade or something because you will swing in the air and never hit anything. I got killed by a kwama forger that way.
As for spells. nothin beats a good open spell. You will probably need to buy a cheap open and then make a strong one. water breathing and walking are essential and you'll need levitate later. cure disease is another necessity. destruction spells are powerful and cheaper than summon spells so i tend to concentrate on alteration and destruction.
It sounds as if the right equipment is all you need.

if i were u, i would cantrip ur heavy armor really really high, and then use touch spells, when ur taking almost no dmg. i am a lvl 67 battlemage, and i have an enchanted ring that does 100 cold dmg for 4 secs (400 cold dmg) that i can cast 37 times in about 10 seconds. i kill anything and everything, really really fast.
