Alignment isn't completely cosmetic. Doing certain things/quests raises/lowers your reputation and for some classes your reputation can't get too high or low else you start getting penalties (Paladins stop gaining XP if their rep is too low, might be the same for Blackguards if their rep is too high) and some characters might leave your party. ei. Lawful Good characters will leave if your reputation goes below 3 and Evil characters will leave if it goes above 18 (IIRC).

Aren't Alignment and Reputation distinct, though? My impression was that Alignment impacts combat, spells and class restrictions, whereas how NPCs react to you is driven by Reputation, and that one doesn't constrain the other. I hear there are only a few quests late in the game that can alter your Alignment, and thought that othewise you could roll an Evil character and still save kittens for a high Reputation.

They do that too, but if you have members in your party that have evil alignments, then they will complain if you raise your rep too high, and eventually leave. So you can go round rescuing kittens but don't expect Korgan or Edwin to stick around if you do.

It also allows/disables certain dialogue options IIRC.

Gotcha. Hm, well, I do find Korgan useful, so I guess I may well have to murder someone every once in a while if my Reputation gets too high.
So I guess at this point the question is whether I risk breaking something and change class and alignment with EE Keeper ((
https://www.reddit.com/r/baldursgate/comments/2aarto/changing_character_using_ee_keeper_bgii_stat/) found a guide), or carry on with my Lawful Neutral Fighter and just roll a new Blackguard for ToB.
I did have a read around some more, and it appears that the (
http://baldursgate.wikia.com/wiki/Blackguard) Blackguard has no reputation restrictions, but I'm actually wondering whether the Alignment itself could be a roadblock. As I understand there will be a couple of quests that can change it late in the game, one wrong choice and you can't progress anymore. I'd like a chance to reroll without having to repeat my progress so far, but I wouldn't want to cheat my way through the game constantly.

I would say that there is no wrong answer to your question on EE Keeper. I used a editor to get my Thief to better lock picking, but that's all I used it for.
People do tend to say to do 1 play with no hacks/cheats/whatever, then on the second use them. Your choice though.

Thanks for the advice, fellas! I rolled a Blackguard too last night, started out as curiosity, then I figured a roll of 96 was too good to pass by. I'll carry on with my original playthrough without butchering it and maybe make some time for this one too, in between the cracks, get a better feel for the class and see what I want to play further in Throne of Bhaal.

You will be fine. Without spoling anything letsnjust say that you will at some point in the main plot gain access to a means of lowering your reputation without having to do anything evil.
