I've looked on the manual and on the cd itself, but I cannot find any backstory to this game. Am I supposed to jump into it knowing nothing about what's going on, or is there a site I can check out that has the backstory on it? Or, can someone volunteer information about the backstory?

AFAIK, there is very little or no backstory supplied with the game. Some versions came with a small "newspaper front page" which had articles which gave some of the backstory. There is a lot of in-game backstory and material supplied in the books, datacubes, newspapers, and emails that you can read. I suggest you do so.
I also recommend you check out the (
http://www.gamespy.com/articles/april02/dxbible/) DX Continuity Bible at GameSpy. It's a series of articles written by members of the DX team and provides a lot of backround about Deus Ex's story, characters and world.

Anyway, the manual supplies some information. And IMO it's fun to pick up the story as you go: IRL, you don't read some rough story book draft of your life before you're born.

Z I'm pretty sure all the Game of the Year Edition copies of Deus Ex came with the "newspaper" extra. But really, all those little articles are just unmodified snippets of articles and newspapers found in the game. You're not missing out on
anything if you didn't get the extra, except for a full list of acting credits and a nice graphic advertising Incan Monkey God's services as manual designers. IMG is, as you know, ION Storm's resident manual design contractor, and they've done some very nice ones, too. I think they're a legacy of the whole Looking Glass heritage (people-wise; as a company they're relatively new-- about four/five years old).

Also, IRL you don't just spawn into a full grown body with a career, family, friends, people who know you, and no memories of it. Or maybe that was just me :)
I'd say the approach taken in DX is pretty much the best you can do without deliberately creating a "temporary memory loss" for the character. Just playing the fool and letting the player figure out where the hell they are, who their character is, and what they're supposed to be doing is fine with me.
Perhaps in the future, when games are interfaced directly to our brain as a set of responsive inputs (perhaps even temporarily replacing our complete sensorium) we'll be able to access the character's memory as if it was our own while in the game. Now that would be cool. Although there would have to be some kind of restriction as to how long you could play, or else we'd be screwed :)
