I'm headed through the crypt, trying to get the shield, and find myself stuck because I haven't got 6 of the carved stones.
According to the RPGDot walkthrough, it's in Room 6 of floor 5, and that room opens to a key found in 5/5.
I remember picking up the key in there and adding it to my keyring [the gargoyles whose heads move to follow you really freaked me out. :) ) But Room 6 won't open. [And my wife, whom I called over to see the freaky gargoyles, remembers me picking up the key.] Since room 6 won't open, I can't get the 6th stone and can't get the shield.
Am I screwed? Or is there some clever-rabbit means around this? Or a way to cheat and give myself this AWOL key or open that door?

I don't have the game handy so I can't check on a good solution, but you can alwas brew/hoad a bunch on invis potions and go and steal the item you'd be trading the shield for... You won't get the 'best' ending, but you'll be able to finish the game at least.

I'm not sure which room is room 6 as I didn't use a walkthrough. But as far as those gargoyles are concerned, they freaked me out a little as well. I'm not sure if there is anything you can do with them. I realised that I could kill both of them, but that didn't seem to produce any effect that I'm aware of.

Thanks for answering, guys. Decision time, I suppose, since I don't really want to steal the K. >Sigh< :)
And yes, Twisty, I'm not sure they would have done anything to me or not.... maybe killing them cost me the key? :) In any event, it struck me as a terribly human, though not very encourgaing, reaction on my part: they scared me, I couldn't figure out how to interact with them, so I killed them. How, um, enlightened. :(

I didn't kill them, they were too cute. ^_^
I am still puzzled by the skulls spinning around a Field of Fire spell. Is there a point to that? Can you cancel it out, destroy it, get something from it?

There's a stone cross on the wall near it you can "use" to turn it off and get healed in the bargain.
[In the end, I restarted the game.]

Are you serious? I think i've just run into this very same bug ... and the only solution is to restart your game?!
In other news ... i've been carrying around about 40 keys in my inventory for half the game, thinking; "This is ridiculous! Why the hell didn't they implement some sort of keyring?!"

I did too because I never noticed Maria's little provision store next to the crypts until Shany was kidnapped.
