I first encountered the mother of all crashes when playing Call of Pripyat. (No surprises there?) Symptoms were basically my speakers giving a kind of low-frequency buzz for a couple of seconds then going silent, and my monitor instantly going to sleep. Hitting the computer's reset button seemed to have no effect, but killing it by holding down the power button worked.
I installed the Pripyat Complete mod and the crash appears to have gone away, so I figured it was something crazy GSC had done. But I've installed Borderlands now and seen that crash a couple of times in a couple of hours of gameplay, so it's obviously not just a Stalker issue. Other games (Darksiders, for one) have run without problems.
Has anyone else had this sort of crash before? I'm on a Windows 7 64-bit machine with a 9800GT. Windows is installed on an SSD, but I'm running my games off a secondary HDD using SteamTool. Though I did try bringing Borderlands back onto the SSD, and still got the crash.

Does this only happen in 3D applications or random power shut downs during general computer use?
It sounds like a heat problem (easy to fix) or a possible failing component.
Check that all cables inside are secure and tight (everything).
Make sure video card is seated properly, check heatsink is secure and tight, not loose.
Also, you can apply a fresh amount of heat paste (artic silver 5 or something similar) to the video cards heatsink (dried paste will cause increased gpu temps).

Yeah, I've only ever seen this while running the two games I mentioned. I'll double-check all the connections inside the case (and outside!). Cheers. I may also see if I can get a monitor on the GPU's temp, just to see where it's running.
