I've given him a healing potion but I never tried giving him a weapon. Does it work?

Yep it does, though you have to give him the potion first, and then give him the weapon, and by the time you do that, you could have killed him yourself even as a crappy fighter.

As I wrote elsewhere, by the time you have given him the potion and the weapon, I usually died (even with quaffing a healing potion myself).
Additonally, the game seems to crash when you die before the Goblin Lord :/
Maybe it is important for later in the game. Can you get the weapon back from Kuldar?
