I was talking to Couderc, Glorofin, not you.
Glorofin on 15/3/2002 at 21:22
Uh, yeah. I know.
Morte on 16/3/2002 at 10:23
Doh! *knocks head against wall* Excuse me, I'm a bit of an idiot. It sometimes takes a while before someones point penetrates my thick skull.
Still, wouldn't it be redundant to have another means of lighting fires, though? You can always use the spell, regardless of magic abilities, so spell or tinderbox, it's no difference, and it gives you a nice introduction to the magic system.
Couderc on 16/3/2002 at 22:25
"It's just a way to introduce the magic system. In-game tutorial, y'know? Lighten up."
Sorry but I didn't realize I was being so hostile, that I needed to lighten up.
Oh, and thank you, Glorofin. I was merely stating things about the demo and how it could be improved on. I really do hope that the must use magic part is only because they wanted everyone who plays to see the magic system. Why would I play a thief who uses magic?
Wasn't the selling point, Play how you want to play, not how are told to... or something along those lines. I still like the game and was not trying to get a flame going, so perhaps Morte, you can lighten up?

It would be absolutely wonderful being able to complete the entire game without using magic, just playing the game like an ordinary thief, Ah... such bliss!! Or as a magician that won't have to steal anything, or a warrior that won't have to steal or use magic -just playing his genuine role as a sword weilding madman.
That would be heaven to most of us I'm sure.
But my rather pessimistic guess is that they won't let us complete the game this way. Probably they have put some enemies in there or tasks/riddles that can only be overcome by using magic. I remember when HexenII (old game same genre, made by someone else) came out, then it was said you could chose to play as warrior, magician, assasin etc... and they would all have different abilities... but it turned out that it didn't matter much what characterclass you chosed. Abilities were so similar and it was just the same hack, hack , slash, slash gameplay regardless. So in Arx's case I fear that there will be some situations that call for magic, some that call for thieving skills and others that call for combat skills, no matter which playstyle you decide on. But if I truly can play through the whole thing by acting like either a real sneaksie thief, or a hardcore magician or a dedicated warrior, and not having to switch role depending on the wims of the level designers, I would be the happiest taffer in any world, I swear!!!!
But hey, shouldn't Raf put our minds at ease on this matter? He can tell us what to expect, right? If I'm worrying for no reason and talking bizarre nonsense here, I deserve to be told.

oh well, I just can't help posting replies today: I have to be honest and frankly tell you that you won't be able to do play the entire game like you'd play in Thief, the main reason being that Thief is a different game :-O
Thief focuses on a set of 15 linear missions that have been specifically designed for a stealthy gameplay, whereas Arx is an open RPG offering many gameplays and a non linear way to solve things. Our game has some stealth / fight / magic aspects that are integrated in the game more like a set of open ways to solve certain situations, but there will be situations where you'll have to fight, although there will always be a way to fight 'cleverly' and act more like an assassin. For example, in the demo you could play a character with a lot in stealth, that would allow you to backstab the first gob in 1 hit if you're lucky. Then, for the Goblin lord fight, instead attacking as a warrior, you could try to give a weapon to Kultar to make him stronger. Also, if you plan to act more like a thief, you'll be able to poison your weapons according to your object knowledge skill, and you can keep away from close combat using a bow while hidden in the shadows.
Then if you hate magic, the entire game can be done with no magic, appart from a few places where you'll have to use a few scrolls that you can buy or find.
I hope I've answered your question.

Thanks Raf.

I didn't think you were being hostile, it just struck me as being unnecessarily nit-picky. A least to me there's no difference if I have to use a spell to light things, when I don't have to boost magic abilities to use it.
Sorry if I came off as a bit hostile, 'twas not my intention.

They should include the use of a tinderbox for people who dont want to use magic.

They don't. Just double click a torch in your inventory, then left click on the torch on the wall. Voila! Light-without-magic.
