The game automatically saves periodically, but I can never load up that saved game.
The same applies to quick-save. I don't remember how I set it up, but for me, F6 quick saves. But when I try to load it, it doesn't work.
Is there a quick save/load default key? The booklet says nothing about it.

autosave can be loaded from the load menu, it's called [yourname]_autosave.
As for quicksaves - default is F6 for quicksave, and F7 for quickload IIRC.

Except that when I load it, it doesn't work. I go to the Load Menu, find the auto-save listed, try to load it, and nothing happens.
I did figure out that F6 quicksaves, but again, when I try to load it, nothing happens. F7 does nothing.

Wasn't there a bug in the unpatched version (or at least pre-1.0004 versions) that made autosaves and quicksaves Plain Not Work if you had a space in your windows username...?

That could be. I originally patched but lost my saved games. So I re-installed and started over. I'm now afraid to patch because I'm too deep into the game.

Here's another question.....Where do I find out what version or patch I'm currently playing. I can't see any reference to it on the main menu, like in the bottom corner in some games there is a stamp saying ver 1.xxx.
Can I upgrade now without losing the save games?

Depends on which versions you're upgrading to/from. I think the rule of thumb is, 1.000 to anything will not work. But 1.00x to any other 1.00x will be ok. Again, I think.

That's correct.

To be sure you may read readme of the patch, it says it explicitly.

At least after 1.0002 and up it's displayed in the left bottom corner of the menu. I myself never experienced any problems with quick or autoloads, but my username doesn't contain spaces, so maybe that's the reason.
Actually 1.0001 fixes a lot of things, balance for instance - prices will be very different (higher). So I rather woulnd't play the game without patch.
