Australia decides the internet filter isn't good enough... - by Livo

It'll take at least another five terms of office before his eyebrows truly leave
On the topic itself, it seems to me it's just going to be another embarrassing round of headlines and then the net filter and everything proposed to go with it will eventually fall over. It's just a question of how much money we waste in that process

Remember folks that Australia is an isolated island nation. If they just let anything pass into the country without scrutiny, it could have dire consequences. It's as true for invasive species as it is for South American midget clown porn.
I mean, why else would they assume such special vulnerability to go to such unique lengths?

History will remember that paedophilia has got immigrants and bears beat when it comes to turning quite sensible people into Charles Bronson-esque facists, keen to leave any due process and presumption of innocence in bullet riddled pieces.
There was an enlightening discussion recently around a (now adult) child actor accusing her former TV dad of inappropriate handling back in the day. The whole thing played out in the press first. A couple of axe grinding columnists serously argued that it wasn't trial by media because the complaint reporting systems of the law were imperfect, had failed in the past and only went forward if they had a good enough case (quelle horreur). Some back and forth later with columnist and some 'net supporters made it plain enough; with child sex abuse claims the safeties are off. All accusations are true, all suspects are guilty. They're everywhere and they must be rooted out at all costs.
The government always play the paedo card when discussion of the filter and so on comes up (and they often try and conflate the two: "it's to protect the children from inappropriate material, they might see by mistake", "ok, can't parents do that?", "sure, that is why we're doing this, so parents can protect their children. Do you know how much child pornography is out there?" "Er hang on. Kids don't look at child pornography. Aren't adults exempt from filtration etc?" "Yes but we need these methods to help catch child pornographers who prey on our children", "So adults will be filtered?", "I don't think anyone who wants to look at that sort of material should be allowed to do you?", "But it's just a web filter. There are other channels.", "How do you know so much about how to get hold of child pornography? Guards!" ).
It's annoying to have to argue with crusaders and victims, who have genuinely horrible experiences and real complaints amid all their reactionary nonsense.

Mybe the guilt lies on the parent's shoulders for being ignorant asses. Neah....society should handle children. It's not the fault of the parent who didn't teach the fat kid to not go into the rusty van for candy, it's the fault of society.

No wonder we exiled them to an island.

Maybe I should reconsider this move.

They are considering fast-tracking this since they heard about your arrival.

To be fair, by the time this gets debated, scrutinised, analysed, debated again and finally gets put into some semblance of law i'll either be deported or won't care anymore.
Like anything to do with the web its doomed to failure, remember the privacy bill Mandleson wanted to put through here in the UK? Yeah that didnt work out so well.

I know quite a few people who are leaving and plan to leave the country because of backwater, backwards moves like this, including myself. Thanks for the relatively cheap education, Australia! Have fun regressing, exporting education and unrefined uranium, and outsourcing major infrastructure projects~ laters

Yeah Vernon, I'm pretty much with you. Pretty sick of Australia. The upcoming election just typifies the whole thing. Practically everyone acknowledges that both candidates are utter twunts, yet completely aware that there's nothing that we, the voters, can do about it.
