He's good at depicting banalities, so why not. Auschwitz was just that, humans at their most banal, so he may surprise people. The trailer sure left an imprint in my memories. Going from that, the question whether the film is exploitative or depicting the real horrorshow will probably be discussed only among German academics and only for a very short time (before giving in to an unspoken fascination with their own evil ancestry, comfortably shivering in their seats). The one fatal failure Boll could make, would be not to stick to the facts but exactly, hence handing scrutinising critics the knife to his back, as that would be the end of his career. But he's probably aware of that.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the mainstream critics reconcile their impulses toward comedy and smartass remarks with the fact that it's about frickin' Auschwitz.

Whatever happens, somehow I think Boll's movie won't offend me as much as Life is Beautiful.
