Audacity is good, although I find it's interface a little clunky (at least on Linux; I've never used the Win32 version).

I installed it on all the G5s at school. It saved my instructors butt a few times as well :joke: Sometimes it's a little buggy on the mac side. My favorite is still Adobe Audition (payware). I've been using that on the Windows side ever since it was Syntrillium's Cool Edit.

It's quite annyoing if you want to use it as an OGG player, because it always asks you if you want to discard the changes when you close it, even when you just listened to the file. Is there a better OGG player? Apart from that Audacity is quite ok.

Audacity is overkill if you just want a player. Both WMP and Winamp should support OGG playback (although I think you have to install the output plugin in both cases).

You're using Audacity as a player? That must be frustrating. :)
Winamp has always just worked for me with OGGs. I don't recall ever having to download any plugins. Unless you mean a codec.

Back in the day before everyone had a million and a half codecs hiding in their system, you needed to download converters to plug in to winamp to get certain things to play. They essentially were codecs, or workarounds of licensed codecs. You still need them to play a few of the rarer sound types like .Spc(SNES), or C64 and Amiga sound files. There are also a few that will play proprietary formats from various games.
Initially the parent companies tried to keep certain codecs for licensed distributions only. The internet being what it is made that impossible in most cases, so plug-ins became mostly useless.

I see. Well, I've never had to install an OGG codec or plugin myself for Winamp, so in my experience it always Just Works. As always with these things, other people's mileage will vary. :)

Sorry, I should have said input plugin not output plugin (essentially a codec).
I think there is something wrong with my Winamp installation though, because it does not play OGGs even after getting the input plugin.

I don't know about wmp as I never use it, but the winamp installation comes with ogg support. So yeah, something is wrong with your winamp.
