I've been experimenting with doing a speedrun for Hexen, actually started a good while ago but gave up due to shoddy performance - the recording would start ok but the game would get very jerky about 30 seconds into the recording, something I eventually put down to my PC not being powerful enough. Now that I have a shiny new 3GHz E8400 Core 2 Duo and Nvidia GTX 260, I thought I might try again but apparently my computer can't record hexen and all it's graphical glory at a resolution higher than 320x240 without the frame rate dropping to 19fps (at 640x480).
Curiously, I get fine performance In Devil May Cry 4 provided I drop the settings a bit. I'm not running any significant background processes, I've got the latest Nvidia drivers, I'm using fraps v2.9.5 and I've turned all the settings in the Nvidia control panel to 'best performance' with zdoom.exe and I'm not using any of this vista malarkey. I'm also writing the videos to a brand new hard drive, so fragmentation isn't an issue.
I've tried setting different frame rates for recording and recording at full-size or half-size but to no avail.
Any ideas?
Okay, so running it in a window, performance is fine. I suppose that'll do but it would be nice to have fullscreen since I'm doing a speedrun...
Problem solved. Using a slightly older version of zDoom was the problem, apparently.
