Assembling a new PC, advice appreciated. - by zombe

In this day and age there is absolutely zero reason to get a PSU under 500w. Or even 600.
zombe on 16/10/2012 at 12:04
Went and educated myself about PSU's ... story short: i go with the proposed 650W (longer story: PSU market is a fucking mess, while i could get away with 500W [if i manage to find one that is sufficiently high quality min lyer] - the price difference is just not worth the trouble).
Sent my offer request (a bit late, so not expecting a reply today):

* (
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?CategoryID=1&DetailID=1289&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=1&LanID=0)
* board audio present
* SATA2, no SATA3 (do not know any real use for it anyway).
* dual channel memory support - like there are any without.
* DDR3-1600 support (Ivy Bridge only)
* USB2, no USB3 (i do not know anything i have that would benefit).
Case also quite random (at least is mesh based - so, some dust protection is a given). Should be fine, but asked them to provide alternatives when something more closely matches my requirements.
Oh, and the GPU provider is rising the price - now it is slightly over 210€ (still better that what Ordi asks - 299€). Wondering whether i should just preemptively grab the card :/

I seriously suggest you spend the extra €20 and get either Asus or the Gigabyte mobo's we previously looked. The chipset and the specification of those mobo's are superior to the ecs. Also they are Full-ATX mobo's with plenty of expandability, where as the Ecs is a Micro-ATX with only one pci-e slot.
That's a bit naughty, if they have it listed at €178 then they should sell it at that price! Try and do a deal with them, say getting a discount on the over all price etc. And which GPU are we referring too the GTX660..?

Ordi does not offer any Asus cards: (
http://www.ordi.ee/EPood/Products.aspx?MC=KOMP&IC=1100)
Expandability: besides the GPU there is about ~0% chance i would add any extension cards in the lifetime of the PC.
Superior specs: could you name something that would be of value and is missing (the stuff that i recognize has no benefits that i know of and the rest ... well i ha no idea about)?
GPU confusion, exact same device, just two providers:
(

vs

Ordi is ~90€ more expensive than the alternative shop.
... have to run.

I was referring to the motherboard, the ECS is a cut-down version in every way (not just physically) of the other motherboards (gigabyte/asus) we have looked at. That ECS mobo has budget-made-in-china written all over it.
And regarding the gfx card, yes the second ship @ €210 is a the best option.

Rather than make a new thread it seemed to make more sense ot post in this active one.
Also looking to build a new setup and could do with some opinions/suggestions.
I'm currently using an Intel Core2Quad @2.66 CPU and ATI 4870 gpu combination that's done brilliantly for me for the past three/four years however it's now time for a new build. Thinking about an Intel and Nvidia combination this time. Now I'm looking to put something together that's going to be able to comfortably handle Arma 3 and a very heavily modded Morrowind two particularly power hungry titles - that's the standard that I'm looking at. Something that's going to keep me content while the next set of consoles come onto the market.
The two disc drives are for different region playback rather than buying an (more expensive) application for it. It's just handier for me to have two different drives. It's been a handy arrangement with dvd drives in the past.
I use the pc for games/work/image editing ran through a monitor and music/films/streaming services iPlayer/4oD through a larger tv. The extra ram is great for image editing and modelling as well.
The 750w psu is so I have the wiggle room if I want to put a second gpu in or add any other components.
Also worth mentioning that I've no desire to overclock either. I'm looking at getting the same case I currently have which has good ventilation so there's no reason to go buying aftermarket cooling.
Here's what I'm looking at initially to build.
OS - Windows Pro 7 - SP1 - 64-bit
CPU - Intel Core i7 (3770K) 3.5GHz Quad Core Processor 8MB L3 Cache 5GT/s Bus Speed
Motherboard - ASROCK Z77 EXTREME 3 Z77 SKT 1155 ATX 4 D3 2100 GLAN USB 3.0 SATA3 HDMI
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) Memory Kit PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 DIMM
GPU - GF GTX670 2GB PCI-E 3.0 - 2GBDDR5 1000MHZ DVIX2 HDMI DP IN
Case - Antec Six Hundred v2 Black and Gun Metal Grey Midi Tower Case (Mini-ITX/Micro-ATX/ATX) or Antec Solo EU (same as currently have)
PSU - Antec EarthWatts EA 750 Power Supply Unit (UK)
Boot Drive - SANDISK SSD 128 GB
Storage Drive - BARRACUDA 2TB SATA - 3.5IN 7200RPM 64MB 6GB/S IN
2nd Storage Drive - (From existing system) Maxtor 500gb
Optical Drive 1 - LiteOn iHOS104 4X Blu-Ray BDROM/RE/RDL/REDL SATA Drive (Internal) (To be set as Region 1 playback)
Optical Drive 2 - LiteOn IHES112 12X Blu-Ray Combo Drive SATA Internal Optical Drive
Keyboard - Logitech Gaming Keyboard G105 UK layout (currently using an old serial keyboard which gets confused with more than two keypresses)
Thanks in advance.

* Motherboard - ASROCK -
dont waste money/time on ASROCK as they ONLY come with a 1yr warranty while costing the same as Asus/Gigabyte which come with 3yrs.* RAM - Corsair Vengeance -
you'll can probably get a Kingston kit with same speed/timings with less money. * GPU - GF GTX670 2GB PCI-E 3.0 - 2GBDDR5 1000MHZ DVIX2 HDMI DP IN -
try and get one with 2x or 3x fan cooler, as it will run quieter and cooler.* Case - Antec 600v2 -
this case is priced too high and is missing options other cases have at a lower price, for example it has no dust filters.* PSU - Antec EarthWatts EA 750 -
its not a particulalry good PSU, its multi rail for a start. I suggest a single rail unit at the very least.* Boot Drive - SANDISK SSD 128 GB
- I suggest the Samsung 830 128GB, better perf, price and reliability.(or the 840 series, newwer generation, few £ more)I take it your from the UK, if so what shops do you like to buy from so I can knock up a replacement list.

Hello there :) Thanks for the suggestions, really appreciated.
All the components are through LambdaTek. I'd made a couple of changes before you posted the reply. Here's the most recent build: (
http://tinyurl.com/8pb38yt)
Swapped out the ram for 2 x 8gb Kingston and from another recommendation the Samsung 830 SSD.
The second case option is one that I already have and has been quiet, well ventilated and sturdy enough for me.
With the motherboard I'm looking for 7.1 sound and enough sata connections for the ssd, two hdd's and the two optical drives. Just been swapping out components and this is another build: (
http://tinyurl.com/8eqf6rl) don't mind not having sli a great deal.
Thanks again for the suggestions. Any ideas on changes to that most recent design?

I haven't seen the (
tinyurl.com/falconguide) Falcon guide posted yet, I must not be stalking this forum as much as I should.
I like to use it as a reference point for builds. Prices are in USB, but there's a "Where2buy" section that lists websites that sell parts for various locations, some you may not have seen yet.
I'm assuming you already know how to build the computer, but for anyone digging around here's part one of three of Newegg's computer guide: (
