<strong>Arx Fatalis English Demo</strong> [2:24 PM EDT (Blue) September 30, 2002] - <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=37773" target="_self">4 Comments</a> <br>The English version of the Arx Fatalis final demo is now <a href="http://www.3dgamers.com/games/arx/">available on 3D Gamers</a>, where they discovered that it was quietly released on <a href="http://www.gamesdomain.com/demos/demo/1706.html">Games Domain</a>. Oddly, it seems most of the files are dated the same day as the release of the Arx Fatalis German demo (<a href="http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=35731" target="_self">story</a>), but it also contains the new version 1.13 executable. The download of this sample of Arkane Studios' first-person RPG is 153 MB.

Its a great improvement really. Almost all of the reasonable suggestions/bug reports that were made have been implemented or resolved. Apart from the fact that you still aren't allowed to make shroom pie :p
There is also a new scroll and some other item/s sitting on a ledge on the entrance to the cavern leading to the pub, but I couldn't find my way up there.
Lizze also gets annoyed if you wander behind her side of the bar and calls for assistance if you decide to repeatedly ignore her, or steal her goods.
It was also great to see that they've implemented physics into the engine. Clipping has also been fixed, as far as I can tell. For instance, the dog no longer does a Buckaroo Banzai into the cavern walls.
I did have one crash, however, falling into the hole that leads to a lower level from the prison cells. This was unexpected, as I never actually experienced a crash in the original demo, only a lot of bugs. Its great to see that they have stamped out the bugs that I had encountered with the original demo.
At any rate, a great effort Arkane. I can't wait until it gets released in Australia.

Although there are interface improvements the new demo runs worse than the original. At least the original was playable and generally stable. The new one has weird screen hiccups when I look in certain areas and after 5 minutes it bluescreened my system.
Oh well, guess I'm not getting this game now.

Just tried the new demo .... very odd bug - the screen would jolt very rapidly around randomly and frequently, like playing a game of UT2003 with a ping of 500. I would end up facing the wall, celing, opposite direction, floor. Very odd.
It seemed to only occur on the first dungeon levels - the keep seemed okay. I tried changing resolution etc. and mouse sensitivity - it wasnt that.
Also I noticed when you first boot up there is a list of graphics cards and Kyro2 is among them! Boo hoo! Still worked using geforce tho .....
My System
Xp Pro SP1
Herc Drivers 16.00 (latest for XP)
Hecules Prophet 4500 Kyro2 64mb
Althlon 1800+
256mb ram
Logitech optical mouse in USB port. (works fine everywhere)
I dont think this bug is mouse related as it did it when i was purely using the keyboard .... hmmmmm. Please tell me it wont happen in full release!

if I had to make any sort of guess, Ed, I'd say that it's your video card. The Kyro chipset's decent for anything except games that use hardware T&L.

I had that one in the original demo happen repeatedly, I guess they haven't fixed it yet, otherwise this game sounds pretty cool.

I had the exact same bug that ed did, and I'm using a GF3...the screen rapidly flickers and changes your viewpoint. His description is very apt, just like multiplayer lag.
no crashes tho :)

I've actually experienced that "change direction unintentionally" bug in both versions of the demo. I thought that it might have been due to a sudden loss in framerates and so I didn't report it.
I'm suprised that Tels isn't out hunting ;)

I've got a question... does the demo have an end? I mean, is there a point where you can progress no further and it tells you you're finished? Or, can you just wander about aimlessly forever?

Sudden change in Direction... Try Turning on "mouse smoothing" in the options... fixed it for me.
As for the new Demo... a few comments...
~The interface is MUCH Better. Still a little kludgy (between mouselook, cursor move, and combat), but good enough to want to purchase the game, now... but there's still room for improvement. If you are having problems... play with all the settings... in the options panel... took me like 20 minutes of fiddling to get it right! :p
~Drawing the runes seems tougher than before to be "recognized properly"... dunno why... but the "preload spells" thing helps. Not sure how well that will work in major battles, since you only get 3 preloads, and they're gone once you fire off the spells.
~I get "black screens" in some of the cutscenes (middle of intro / title cutscene, and the "tell the king" cutscene... audio still works) I don't know if that's due to a bug, or the full cutscenes aren't included in the Demo.
All in all... I'm looking forward to picking this game up when it hits the stores. Good Job, Arkane-Studios!
