Fair enough then,
if a quick save/load and a few more controls customization can buy us a new customer, know that it's in already in the current version :-O

instead of placing the belt and book icons on the screen (I actually had to look pretty closely at at them at first to even see what they were), hotkeys to bring them up might have been used instead
You mean like using
TAB to open the book and
I to open your inventory?
Strange that you couldn't, that's how I opened the book and inventory.

I admire your diplomacy, PraetorJudis. ;)

Raf:
Crashes aside (lots of em!) the game is pretty cool. Some suggestions:
AI seems to need a bit of work yet, the one AI that you can get to follow you around (outside the bar :) ) gets stuck a lot.
Physics: Dropping items seems a bit clunky sometimes, and when you do, they "float" in midair at the time.
Keybinds: I can rebind keys, but even though I do, the changes don't always save, and even when they do, I have to "rebind" them to get them to work after I reload the game. Also, there's a few keys I can't bind at all (mouse3, 4, 5) etc.
Crashes! Did I say that already? many many many unexpected crashes to desktop. I don't suppose you have a debugging switch we can turn on and send you crash reports, do you?

Hey Raf,
Gratz on a very entertaining game! A little question I hope you'll know! The latest games (S.W.I.N.E., AQUANOX, ETHERLORDS, CAR TYCOON) from Fishtank Interactive were not distribuated in the Benelux! Now is my question, is this gonna happen again for ARX FATALIS or have they a publisher for the Benelux-district? I hope I don't need to import this beauty!

Benelux is in Europe... You can buy in € anywhere in Europe without any problem.

Fair 'nuff Preator, I was too busy trying to figure out when I could move and when I was in "search through inventory place my little hand thingy on objects in front of me" mode. Wasn't too clear. And instead of having a "stealth" icon, why not just have a "hold crouch" key that enables you to move silently? Currently, even in stealth mode, it sounds like I weigh around 400 pounds and my soles are armored. Kudos! Raf, I can tell that you've cut your teeth in other projects before. Not too many developers have the guts to respond to a post as harsh as mine. I may not represent the majority in here, but I tell a LOT of people when I have found a game I really liked. Kudos.

I think we've become very accustomed to FPS games that all have the exact same interface, and we're proving to be inflexible when presented with soething new. As humans are the most adaptable critters on the planet (well, perhaps they're second to roaches), this strikes me as odd. Gothic was plagued with complaints about it's control system, which (though poorly documented) was perfectly easy to adapt to and enjoy. I suspect Arx will suffer the same barrage of complaints.
Try this instead of demanding the developers adapt to your expectations: Lose the expectations, read the documentation, and stop trying to rush through this seemingly well crafted RPG. There is no need to hurry to reach the end of the level, you don't need extreme precision of movement, as you're not going to round a corner and face four rail gun weilding robots intent on tearing you to shreds. It's when you take a more cautious pace that you realize the control system is well suited to the environment you're being presented with.
If we can't even adapt to a new game's slightly different control system, then there's something wrong with the gene pool.

Just played it through for the second time, and I must agree with PraetorJudis. The Interface (at least at 1024x768) is actually very easy to use once you've got the knack.
I also found the 2 runes I had missed on the first run (hmm .. and found another magic move and at least one spell, because I did the vertical run in the wrong direction ... too bad the game kept on saying I can't cast THAT yet ... I would have loved to know what I was doing;)
A remark : the head-bobbing isn't really that bad, as long as the ground is flat. But the view jerks vertically a lot as soon as you run over objects lying on the ground, or the ground is irregular (hmm ... probably the same;). I don't know ... a solution might perhaps be to change the vertical movement of the camera slower than the actual character body or to link it not with the body and ground but with a flatter ~reference ground~ (damn .. if I knew how to explain it ... :\ that's not visible. (does this sentence make any sense at al, I wonderl???)
Apart from that, it was fun (for me) even the second time around :)
Bye,
Fuinelen
