Arx Fatalis: I'd buy it today. (interface suggestions) - by Glic

I haven't heard anyone else complain about the water. Do you think that it may just be your gc?

:eww:
Can they fix it so it doesn't make me naseous? I really want to like the game, but the motion of it made me want to lose my lunch...
The interface seems a bit kludgy...but the thing that had me shaking my
head even after the first few minutes of play is a bug I encountered.
The goblin outside the cell approached me...I hit him twice with the
legbone and then he ran outside and stopped in front of the portcullis
of my original cell...I followed him, and hit him continuously and
repeatedly over the head with the legbone. He never died, never fought
back, but he was mouthy as hell and kept calling me names. :weird:
I finally gave up on him as he seemed "stuck". I went to
free the other prisoner and when I double-clicked him he turned around
and called me a "dirty goblin". :wot: Mmmmkay......Not a great start
The game needs lots of polishing, but I think a good game will evolve. I just hope they take their time and fix all the things that need fixing. Remember Wizards & Warriors? It was an awesome game, but many never gave it a chance due to quite a few bugs upon release...Take your time Arkane...

Besides the Seams and the Water... the game looks
VERY good, graphically.

I read you complaining about the seams. I think it's legitimate.
However, it's not as if ALL the textures had visible seams.
Because, in fact, the only seams I've seen are around the trap in the prison and on the parquet of the tavern (especially 1st floor).
And even if this might be good to fix these seams, it's not even really eye-catching. I mean, it's because you complained about seams that I started to search them and eventually find some.
About the water... Maybe it's not photorealistic but it's nice enough. And it's above the average, compared to many other recent games.
Now I agree that if they find some time to improve anything, that's good. But they probably have other graphics to finish (for further levels / characters / finale sequence ?) and AFAIK, they are a small team who delegated some graphics to other companies and it would be expensive to contact them again. Note that this paragraph is only hypothetical, though.

Well... all I'm saying is that with a little program like PhotoSEAM... it's pretty easy to go through all the textures and take out the seams. As you pointed out... not all of their textures have seams... so fixing the ones that do, should take very little time... once you get used to PhotoSEAM... You can edit seams out... about 50 textures a day (Depending on complexity). It's a neat little program.
As for the Water... I disagree. Even with gamma cranked all the way up it's near invisible (Can barely see the top texture). I'm not saying it has to be Photorealistic and use Pixel and Vertex Shaders... but it should at least "LOOK" somewhat like water.... LOL ;)
Whats funny is... a lot of people are jumping on my case over 2 minor art criticisms... and they don't say much about the other criticism, because they mostly agree that the interface and combat need a little work. The small art criticisms are intended to say "Hey Arkane... your missing a couple of details that are considered the Commercial norm nowdays". Does this mean their art sucks? No. I think overall the Art in the game is quite good. :)

Seams: mmmh... OK.
Water: could you post a screen shot??? Because on my computer, I see a very nice turquoise lagoon-like limpid water... so I just can't imagine how "INVISIBLE" it can be on your machine... If the image you post is much different from what I see, I'll post mine when I'm home.

What this means is I often had to turn off mouselook mode just to check if something in the game world was useable. A good example would be the barrels; I did not realize at first that they could be examined, because they didn't highlight as I strolled past them in mouselook mode.
3. Currently, it's not possible to use an item in the environment without leaving mouselook mode. This seems like a significant issue to me. In SS2, you can right click on an item in the environment to immediately use it. Compare that single-click to AF in which you have to right-click, then double-click on the item. That's two extra clicks. ;)
Yes. It really, really needs this.
Finally finished downloading the demo and I like it a lot. The interface is somewhat quirky and there are some odd graphical bugs (I cought a glimpse of my legs above my head. Wtf?). Can't say much else about the graphics, as my monitor refuses to show any red right now. :eww: The voiceacting's sub-par, especially the goblins, which is a pity, but understandable. I assume they're on a pretty thight budget, and can't spend that much on the acting talent. The writing wasn't that spectacular either, wish they had hired an author to polish it up. That's about all my complaints. I'm buying this, make no mistake. I great atmosphere, even without the red. I love baking bread.

As for the tuquoise, that's more of a lighting effect... there is a almost completely transparent texture on the surface of the water.... you have to crank the gamma all the way up to even see it. It's so transparennt... that when you look at your feet you still can hardly see it.
Lemee put it this way... the water is TOO clear.... heh. You can barely see any motion in it. Some steam particles off the bottom of the waterfall wouldn't hurt either.

Oh OK. Indeed, the water is VERY clear... But maybe it's wanted...
Actually, the ground is rocky, not dirty; so it might be a good reason why the water is clear.
Maybe there are further levels where the water is not as clear...
Le Magot d'Oz on 9/3/2002 at 04:02
if you could post a shot, I'd be interested in having a look : that may helps me understand your most (the water is one of the most beautifull/realistic one I've ever seen, even if it was not animated -expect for its texture)
Glic> I'm pretty sure most of your complaints will be meanless if you play with no toggle mouselook option : a lot of people are complaining about the too many button you've to click but it's absolutely not the case when you do not choose this option (I think it shouldn't be set by default... Digi will kill me ! ;) )
