I have seen people raving about this game, and having read good reveiws spent £30 on Arx Fatalis. I couldn't beleive that at long last there may be a game similar to the best game ever produced "Ultima Underworld 2"....
And it's nothing like it. O.k the graphics are similar and the 3rd person perspective is incorporated.
But there is no rpg feeling to the game. Where are the stats, skills quests exp points great monsters to fight e.g Doorstag etc
Where were the interesting places, e.g Pits of carnage, The mages accademy, and even Killlkorn keep.
Even the items were not as interesting. Remember finding the cudgel of entery in underworld 2. There is nothing like that here,
Arx Fatalis is the most disapointed i'VE ever been in a computer game.
To even compare it to the great Ultima Underworld series is an insult in itself..........

You obviously didn't look very hard... Ok, there may not be as many skills as Underworld, but they are there.
I'd say Arx is more similar to the first Underworld, and there are certainly plenty of similarities there.

Yes there are skills, but in underworld 2 you developed your charicter by gaining experience e.g fighting monsers/ solving quests.
In this game there is little or no reward for killing monsters, and the skills and stats available limit your charicter.
For example learning - for an increase on exp gained.
Trade - better prices
enchant item
I admit there is a stats system of sorts but it dosen't jump out at you
I nearly missed it.

You haven't played very far into the game have you...? You gain experience and level up like in UW (only you don't have to seek out trainers to improve your skills) You can imporove you trading (intuition) you can enchant items (it's essential to completion) And there are more stats than in UW (four attributes instead of three) and you have better control over them rather than a random set that you can't improve over the course of the game, a la UW.

No I haven't, i stopped playing the game just after the scene where you trick the king into eating the apple pie by adding something to it and delivering it to him.....
I last played the game over a year ago, and am struggling to remember specific details about it..
All I can say is that I wasn't enjoying it, and actually deleted it from my hard-drive at this stage because of this.
perhaps you can refresh my memory, do you get exp for killing monsters? If you don't this would be a major reason for me not to like the game. Why not just run past a monster rather than bothering to kill them (unless they have an item e.g key needed for the next stage.
I still have the game, but I doubt whether it's presence will ever grace my computer again.

...Didn't you notice the 'Level up' jingle and the large flashing cross when you fixed the lift on level 1? That should be your first level up and you can improve you skills due to the experience you accumulated by killing monsters, completing quests and solving puzzles. One of the things I liked about Arx was you could also improve your stats (strength, intelligence etc) as well as your skills unlike in UW or 2nd edition D&D games.
Arx has depth and scope on a par with UW, a thing which is missing from lots of games these days. You really should give it another try, people aren't calling it the 'unofficial UW3' for no reason... ;)

I do still have it, and may try it again, just to refresh my memory. I'm struggling to remember much detail, although I do vaugely remember some sort of mine, and exploring around there.
As the only games I play are rpg's many are similar and are hard to destinguish between. I do remember stopping playing it though, as the game wasn't what I was expecting.
I don't even remember leveling up.
Perhaps the expectations I had for the game were to high, as underworld 2 was so good, which led me to disapointment.
If i was wrong about the game (i'll try it again but doubt i'll change my mind) i'll be the first to hold my hands up!!
Any talk asscotiating a game with the underworld series (although I didn't find it to be so) is entitled to a 2nd chance

Arx gets much better after the goblin levels, which i didn't really care for that much. Once you get to the later levels and get a good spell selection it really gets good.
I must say i have a problem with panning the game as you've done in quite a few threads if you've only played through such a small section..

Zach,
I agree that some-one shouldn't really go on about a game if they have not played enought of it to know what there talking about. However I have played a 3rd of the game, and due to my explortive nature in the world of arx played the game for around 30 hours. Therefore I felt I was entitled to judge the game on my experience up to it at that stage.
Are you saying i'm not entitled to an opinion because I've not finished the game?, or did you simply underestimate just how much time I have spent playing the game?
Anyway I am preparing to give the game another chance, simply because so many other people think it's similar to the underworld series, and perhaps I was judging it on these previous games merits.
It's also over a year since I played the game, and so I will play the game again to see if anything has changed

...Hold on, you played the game for 30 hours and you didn't ever level up...? :weird: You could have finished the game in that time. Didn't you read the manual at any time? There's plenty of references to leveling up.
How far did you get...?
