From the Arx Fatalis tech problems board, solution courtesy of tkobo:

"for those of you having problems with the game loading, with it stopping at a black screen with a mangled taskbar at the bottom try this;
Set yuor desktop resolution to match the games default.
That being 640x 480.
I have been trying to get the demo to run now for about 1 day.
When I did this it ran like a champ, only 1 crash in game also all the way thru the demo.
My desktop is normally 800x600.I also treid to change the demo's config file resolution setting to 800 x 600 to match my desktop default setting, but it didnt help at all. Still got the black screen. "
Kudos to tkobo! This solution seems to work. This will not prevent CTDs (I had about 6 before finishing the demo), but should allow you to start the game at least. Other suggestions:
* Reboot before playing. Arx seems to be extremely finicky about memory availability, leading to dramatically lowered framerates if you've been running other apps.
* If you want to play at something higher than the default resolution, change the resolution in the game (say to 800x600), then quit and change your desktop resolution to match again (now this would also be 800x600), then restart the game.
* Save often! The demo is highly unstable on many systems, so unless you like replaying areas over and over again, save any time you make some progress.
* Let the developers know about problems. Post to this forum or the Arx Fatalis tech problem board. Be precise, give any relevant information, and avoid abusing the developers in the same message - I'd suggest you post another thread or to another board if you want to vent.
The problem may be related to some nvidia cards, and definitely seems to be related to switching video modes, as do some of the other crashes in the game (after saving, at level changes, at least for me).
Good luck!
