Well, I've downloaded the demo, and now I've got a problem. Every time the demo starts up, it crashes. Here's the list of events:
* Double-click the icon
* Hard drive activity, change of icon, etc, suggesting application is starting
* Application window appears, then assumes the title of Arx Fatalis Demo v1.0 or something similar
* Screen goes blank, then hourglass (low res) appears in the middle
* Screen changes mode, still blank, no hourglass now, and at the bottom of the screen the edge of the task bar (I have it on autohide) can be seen, and occasionally a couple of coloured lines above it. Here it hangs, and I eventually need to end the task to drop back to the desktop.
[/list=1]
Here's what I've tried in an attempt to get it running:
* Downloaded the demo again from a different site
* Uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled several times.
* Downloaded and installed the latest video drivers.
* Uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled several times.
* Shut down Zone Alarm in case that was affecting it.
* Gone raving mad :p
I am trying to run it on a P3-500 with Win 98 2nd Ed, a Diamond Viper II Ultra (32mb TNT2 Ultra), 450mb ram, SB Live, DirectX 8. Any ideas?

edit the cfg.ini file
change first_time (?) param to 1
then try it ...
game should load up

Thanks for the suggestion madmax, but I'm still having the same problem even after that change :(

I'm having a lot of crashes to the desktop also.
Windows 2000
Athlon 800 (TBird)
512MB ram
DX8.1
GF3 23.11 drivers
The game has a few annoying bugs - When you change the controls, the keys say they're remapped, but if you exit the game and come back, even tho the key mappings haven't changed you have to remap them to make them work.
The game crashes to the desktop constantly! Arrrgh.
Following that note, sometimes you can't save your game, the "Save Game" button just won't light up. It doesn't always do that tho.
The 23.11 drivers give you weird graphics artifacts in the room where the coil of rope is first found.. Aniso level 2 (trilinear) is activated, and I'm using Quincunx AA.
Aside from those, the game plays great! Fix the bugs and you guys have a winner on your hands! ;)

Grrrr. I'm in the same boat as Entropy it seems.
Let me know if you have any luck.
Also, if anyone else could figure this thing out.. feel free to post your esoteric hoohaw...

I, too, have the problem of Entrophy!!
I, too, have posted it at the offical-type board, but, unfortunately, no developers, or people able to offer actual help, have posted there, and my post is lost in a sea of those complaining of crashes.

You'd think they would give a hoot.

Perhaps they just don't want to post a "We don't actually know how to solve this problem" post....
:eww:

Maybe it's a problem with TNT2 card.. I dunno. It's very hard to troubleshoot these sort of things -- I'm using Windows XP with a Geforce 2 GTS and it works fine.
Do all of you (who are having the same -exact- problem) have the same machine specs more or less?
