I don't even LIKE Dream Theater, though a lot of it has to do with James Labia.
Yeah, he grates, but once you've lived for years with Geddy Lee, Jon Anderson, and the like, he's a welcome relief. You do know that ever since Metropolis, he's started singing in a mostly lower register? Still annoying at times, but more James Hetfield than Geoff Tate. Especially albums like Train of Thought.
And I gotta say, I appreciate Pink Floyd on an artistic level, but they fucking put me to sleep. I cannot stand the long, plodding, never ending songs that have no coherent beginning, middle, and end. They remind me of a ttlg religion thread.

I like Geddy Lee. That said, Labrie's not the worst vocalist I ever heard- that would be Gene Adam from Iced Earth.
Also, go listen to some later Anathema. They've basically turned into a less-pretentious Pink Floyd. Their album A Fine Day to Exit is one of the best albums of 2001.

Have you guys read, or heard anything about (
http://www.tsr-project.com/) TSR?
I have to agree about his voice, it gets to me after awhile.
I'll take PT, and Opeth.

PT?
Also Opeth rules. Except their last album.

Sorry, PT = Porcupine Tree. Been listening to a prog FM station at my shop that is rather cool. (

I really like PT on most days, but there's times I wish he would just get to the fucking point. A lot like Floyd in that respect.

I haven't really had a chance to listen to Porcupine Tree, but as long as it doesn't sound like Pain of Salvation I might like it.

Long songs ain't dead. Get last year's album "Little Lucid Moments" by norwegian rockband Motorpsycho. 4 songs, 60 minutes.

Well, at the time that Pink Floyd sold out, there were actually people who said "damn, even Pink Floyd sold out". Most of my older musician friends refer to the Dark Side--->Final Cut era as "disco Floyd", altho not having been there it's kinda hard to relate to that.
every other year any style is considered soon to be dead by some hype journalism. why care?
Though I cringe at post Final Cut Floyd, I wouldn't say they sold out. They were just happy old men doodeling away.
Furthermore:
Rush good
King Crimson good
Yes good till 80
Genesis good till 74
Dream Theater bad bad bad why bother when there's Tool?
Thank you and have a nice Weekend.
