hi, arrows suck.
Even with a daedric bow with 200/200 damage(hacked for testing), and daedric arrows, I was killing things far slower than with a normal daedric axe. As in monsters that take two good blows with the axe took 12ish. The damage incurred was greater, even though I was able to put some distance between me and the mob... usually.

That's exactly the point; How are you supposed to take down any mob being 100 meters or more away; silently, without disturbing the nearby mobs and so forth.
It's another style of gaming; Hack'n'Slash versus silent assassination.

Originally posted by Zaphod I'm with x3no. This is merely a guess, because the game is woefully silent on this, but for normal arrows: chiltin < iron < steel < silver < glass. Just based on how expensive they are.
Later on you can find or make enchanted arrows which, obviously, are better than any non-enchanted ones.
While we're at it, can anyone give me a definitive answer on armor ratings? How is it that heavy Orcish or Imperial Steel armor can have a 2 or a 4 rating, but light Glass armor can have a 110 (numbers from memory and only approximations). Does that mean that, assuming I have equal skills in Heavy and Light Armor, the glass would actuallly be a better choice, and would protect me better from normal (non-magic) melee attacks? What's the deal? Above Glass you have Ebony and Daedric. Very nice for hunting Cliff Racers.
The Armor rating listed in the game is the Armor's base rating modifed by your skill. That being said Glass armor is, in fact, superior to Orcish and Imperial Steel. The only reason for that is because Glass is the numero uno light armor, while Orcish and Imperial Steel are relatively low on the item quality totem pole for their armor skills (medium and heavy, respectively).

Simply by opening the TES CS and choosing the Weapons tab:
Arrows:
Chitin: 1-2
Iron: 1-3
Silver: 1-3
Steel: 1-4
Bonemold: 1-4
Glass: 1-6
Ebony: 5-10
Daedric: 10-15
(Big jump there at the end, eh?)
Here's what's really odd, though: Arrow damage is listed under "Chop" not "Thrust"!
What's also odd is that bolts have three types of damage listed. Fer instance, iron bolts do this kind of damage:
chop: 2-3
slash: 0-1
thrust: 0-1
Now that's really odd.

Every weapon has three damage types. Arrows just use the first one to determine damage.

As for the armor question: Try making a char with 2 specializations in armor. You'll notice that perhaps your ebony armor no longer has a rating of 2 anymore. That's because you chose to use one armor over another, so of course if you don't know how to use, say, a heavy armor you're not going to get any kind of protection from it (check your heavy armor skill, it's prolly <5 or <10)
The above is a sorta guess, cuz I started a char with medium armor and saw glass armor with 2 AR. Hence, the conclusion that if your skill lvl isn't high enough, it don't float.

good god people, the armor rating is completely dependent on how high you skill level is for the class of armor you are wearing.......its not rocket science here people
and the game comes with an editor so you look at all this stuff yourself.....save everybody a little time and look some stuff up for yourself:ebil:

Bethesda published an official mod which includes new arrow types available in Vivec.
