heya
First: I'm not into spoilers, I prefer hints...
I've already found Iron, Steel, Glass, Bonemold, Silver, and another type of arrows I haven't got the name at hand.
(not counting the chitin and enchanted ones)
Now I was wondering which type works best for what creatures; As the special types are hard to come by, I don't want to waste them just for testing...
for example, I found out that only the Silver arrows work against Scamps...
Any ideas?
(btw: one can become really nasty being a thief with a chameleon 80% amulet ;) )

far as I know, they're all the same, save for the need for silver (or enchanted) arrows to kill various daedra (scamps, ogrim, etc.)
I'm not sure about this yet, because I have no unenchanted weapons (*grin*), but is this game like Daggerfall in that you just need silver or better to hit certain creatures? Could I, for example, nail a scamp with an ebony dagger? Or would it need to be enchanted?

I think the different arrows give you more chance to hit the max points on your bow. And yes in this game you need a silver grade weapon + to hit certain creatures.

I don't think that they are mostly all the same (why would they be in then...)
For example, my guess is that glass arrows work best for unarmored creatures (splinters); Steel arrows seem to be a tilt stronger than Iron ones and work better against armored people...

The whole arrow topic has me a bit confused also, for instance the daedric longbow I found is listed as doing 2-50 points of damage, so do good arrows simply act as a modifier? ie +1, 2 etc or what?, as far as I can tell the bow does 2-50 whethere i'm using chitin arrows or daedric arrows.

modifier or an addition...
Daedric arrows are the best, but I've only found two.
2-15 iirc

My *guess*, without having tried to enchant single arrows, is that better arrows work like anything "better", ie can hold more enchantments. I noticed that better arrows hit more often as well, but I believe the dmg is decided by the bow alone.

I'm with x3no. This is merely a guess, because the game is woefully silent on this, but for normal arrows: chiltin < iron < steel < silver < glass. Just based on how expensive they are.
Later on you can find or make enchanted arrows which, obviously, are better than any non-enchanted ones.
While we're at it, can anyone give me a definitive answer on armor ratings? How is it that heavy Orcish or Imperial Steel armor can have a 2 or a 4 rating, but light Glass armor can have a 110 (numbers from memory and only approximations). Does that mean that, assuming I have equal skills in Heavy and Light Armor, the glass would actuallly be a better choice, and would protect me better from normal (non-magic) melee attacks? What's the deal?

well - the different armor materials has a certain set value.
E.g: Daedric - 266, Dwemer 66, ...
The armor rating you get depends on that value and your armor skill...
I do not know if it is as simple as you get the skill-percentage of the material value when you wear it. And remeber that there are three armor skills in the game...
However higher armor rating - better protection!
I cannot say wether it also makes you harder to hit - I have noticed that at the higher levels, enemies often have a hard time hitting me. However high armor means good protection - and you will not suffer nearly as much damage.

I may be wrong here, but I'm almost certain that I've killed both scamps and ogrim with chitin and steel arrows (the only reason I'm pretty sure is because I stashed all my silver arrows for undead bashing). I almost never use silver arrows and have had no problems taking creatures down - in fact, come to think of it, I've definitely killed skeletons with normal arrows as well. Hmm.
