Well, to say the least, a stealth game becomes considerably less challenging when you can teleport. Since the challenge in sneakers is 'Create a plan to get from point A to B', that would be dumbing down.

If this had been called Thief 4 lots of people would be fuming over...
Pretty funny considering how many people have posted in all the Dishonored threads something to the effect of "This is Thief 4!" The fact is, it's not nearly as sophisticated at Thief on the stealth side of things, but I don't think it's trying to be. It's doing it's own thing, which is just fine. I'm enjoying it a ton, although I have taken a few days off after playing nonstop for the first few days after release.

Depends entirely how it's set up. Are gas arrows dumbing down?

No, because they're an extremely limited resource. Blink can be used pretty much whenever the player wants.

Being an original IP is certainly a part of it. If this had been called Thief 4 lots of people would be fuming over no lightgem, guard AI's not searching properly, no dousable torches, Blink making it too easy, actiony approach being too viable, etc. But, despite being streamlined compared to the Thief games, it also plainly and simply offers a more enjoyable gaming experience than TDS did.
Disagreed. Dishonored doesn't have any level which are as enjoyable as Shalebridge Cradle and overlook mansion.
And the game fails to create the dark mood which the Thief games have.

And what if Blink was extremely limited? It's all in the execution imho. If you have extra tools/abilities in Thief (4) it can still be Thief. I've previously suggested a whole bunch of tools, abilities and approaches you could have in a Thief game that would still make it a much more stealth based affair than Dishonored. Difficulty scaling is a very important aspect of it, as is the nature of the stealth and AI.
I see no reason to not have a limited Blink ability in Thief.

Still, I think if you start giving Garrett supernatural powers, you're changing a lot of what Thief is about.

What do you mean exactly? the mood isn't exactly the same a Thief? I really hope this doesn't go into the "wowgayness" argument about colour palette, because that's a useless direction. This game is extremely atmospheric and moody. The dingy and infected city, the dark music and that heart talking to you in that disembodied voice. If we're talking about dark mood you just have to look at the Overseers, They're obviously an homage to the Hammerites in thief, except they're far more sinister and you take them a lot more seriously, there's no slapstick humor involved with them like there was with the Hammers.
Dishonored is extremely dark, even if that doesn't involve a lot of shadows. I hope you didn't expect a clone of Thief. I'm drinking in the dark mood this game sweats out.

Disagree 100%. There's a strong sense of direness to everything with the plague and the police state.

Blink reminds me a lot of the rope arrow, in terms of just how versatile and fun it is, and how it can be applied to so many different places...possibly including ones the devs didn't even think of.
(I really don't think Thief 4 should have any kind of teleport system...I hope it has rope arrows! But I think Blink is a fantastic tool in Dishonored and doesn't overpower the character at all. There's still many limits to it, and it's still satisfying when you discover a really cool place you can use it.)
