In all honesty I was too busy kicking people off cliffs and backstabbing them/silently shooting them in the face with arrows to experience much of the combat system. And it was still a great game.

Not sure how anyone would expect it to look "realistic" since games still look like games, no matter what the style, but I for one could certainly stand for it to be less caricatured.
It may be that my worries are unfounded, but given the popularity of Bioshock, I am guessing that my dislike of cartoon aesthetic on top of dark games is somewhat niche, so I can't realistically expect to be catered for.

I was going to bring that up. I don't think Bioshock suffered at all from its look. Perhaps the opposite; Darkness or no, it made the weirdness easier to swallow.
Hard to say, of course. In general I'd say the console audience in particular had no problem with it. And that's because most games are a little exagerrated at least. Over there especially.
Maybe it's us PC mopes that are more leery.

Ooh, that looks very nice.
Not sure what's happening at :55, but what the hell.

Looks like Bend Time + stabby/slashy action.

The people don't strike me as particularly odd looking in that one either (when you can see their faces)
I am a little worried about how bland the character movement is in that clip. Very skate-y with little spring to it. Thief totally nailed the 'feel' of the viewpoint in a way only things like Amnesia and Mirror's Edge have approached since. It can't be underestimated in how it enhances immersion. I know some people puke at the slightest thing, so hopefully there's a slider or some such.

There is a bit of a whooshing around in a disembodied camera vibe.
I think the people who puke are the death match crowd. For this kind of game the immersion and improved 3Dness that comes with head bob (the subtle parallax effect that comes from head movement is apparently one of the things that helps brains judge distance) would probably be worthwhile.
