Tis a weird combination of styles in that video, no doubt. I don't like it tbh, there is too much HL2 in it and it looks too derivative.
Re: Dark Messiah. I really liked the design. But I liked how visceral it was even more. I wish I hadn't given it away now.

Actually, the city in Dishonored was designed by Viktor Antonov, who also designed City 17 in HL2. :)

And that's precisely the problem. His distinctive style is practically completely synonymous with HL2 by now, which makes seeing it in Dishonored all weird.

I was a bit - ooh Half Life 2 - when I first saw some of screenshots and concepts, but that's passed. I think there's more than enough of its own neo-victorian vibe to make it stand out as its own thing. Especially since the trailer.
It'd be nice to see some in game footage - I'm interested to see how some of the vision that's in the pre-rendered stuff translates in the Unreal engine.

I don't really think HL2 at all, it reminds me more of Thief and perhaps what the city could have evolved into hundreds of years after its medieval era. :)
I do see a similarity between the cops on stilts and the striders i HL2, but that's it really.

I think the main reason it has any HL2 vibe is just because it's city streets in a near-future alt reality, and aside from DX, HL2 is the main game that took ownership over that setting. But even aside from DH having its own aesthetic, if the levels are as open as I hope they are & as they are advertising, with multiple routes and back alleyways, then I don't think it's going to be much like City-17. HL2 was still essentially a corridor shooter.

The angles, shapes and general atmosphere are definitely reminiscent of City 17, much more than of any other computer game world I can remember. I don't have a problem with this, though; it's still a pretty original look for games (in terms of its specifics - obviously the whole dystopia thing has been done in games...).

Yeah pretty cool.
When they said the basic MO of the game was revenge it reminded me of Tarantino on Kill Bill, saying that sometimes you don't need some convoluted complex MO to really drive a plot. She was wronged and wants revenge on everybody; what more do you need haha... Something kind of purifying or elemental about an MO that base and simple.

I'm sure Arkane were all terribly sad to hear that BioShock 3 has been delayed until 2013.
