Not even System Shock?!
No, I'm ashamed to say. That said, I disliked the Bioshock demo enough to never give it a try and after watching someone play through Bioshock Infinite, I wasn't that interested.

It's never been easier to get both System Shock games, so hop to it.

Most games work with simple plot elements. But anyway general opinion on Dishonored has always knocked it for the story being the weakest part. So you're not alone on that. I thought it was functional enough, and I liked it for the gameplay. I would have liked it to have been a bit longer and have a few more plot tangles, but I enjoyed myself with what was there.

I found the darker aspects of Dishonored easier to absorb in the DLC where you play as one of the "bad guys." Murdering guards just trying to do their jobs and robbing people blind felt in character for Daud. Corvo seemed like he should have been playing a semi-righteous, if vengeful, role in the world, especially since protecting Emily is one of the key points of the game.

Corvo being a silent protagonist works against the base game in a really big way. The players need to be given more reason to believe that what Corvo is doing after saving Emily is right than the word of the Conspirators. And giving him an internal narration would've also been another good way to reflect chaos level in-game.

I agree. It would have been much more interesting to hear comments from Corvo throughout the levels.

I found the "silent protagonist" thing to be completely jarring. The character very clearly has his own MO, his own history, and his own opinion of events that take place in the game and other characters seem like they want to treat him as something other than a mute. It also would have (as was done brilliantly in previous, similar games) allowed for a very sublime form of exposition through what can be inferred in conversations.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dishonored, but I too felt the "Freeman treatment" detracted from the experience, whereas Michael Madsen's VOs in Knife of Dunwall added to it.

I don't think it works for Freeman, even.

I do, but it's one of the few games where it does. I'm so glad they let the protagonists talk in CoD Black Ops.
