I don`t mind Steam as an online service - nearly got on it a while ago, and would now if had broadband - but if you need net connection to play a retail version, it is fucked up.
I thought the very point of a Steamworks retail game is that it can be activated on Steam and is added to your account, i.e. can be downloaded etc.

Let's not derail this thread into a broadband vs dial-up connection debate but I do agree that it's annoying when a game requires a huge (> 1GB) download when you've bought the game media from a retail outlet. Online activation is a far easier pill to swallow.

You'd be surprised how many people is out there without it.
In the UK I think the last figures I saw were that 75% of people online were using broadband. I suspect the majority of the 25% who weren't are very casual users or those who don't play PC games. Yes, there are some areas that don't get broadband access and I know from personal experience how much of a pain that can be.

I don't even think it's an anti-piracy measure, everybody knows it does not work, Valve ain't so stupid. They probably think that anyone hopeless enough not to be connected is a pirate anyway, so sod them and let's have everybody else sign up - it`s a great marketing tool.
If you accept that people who want to pirate games will do it anyway then yes - you're correct. What they've done, however, is provide a groundwork for online marketplaces that are far more approachable, usable and can provide decent value for money compared with traditional retail outlets. I'm not their biggest fan, but I'm happy that retailers like them are available on the internet as the PC game shelf allocation continues to shrink.

If I wanted a game on fucking Steam, I'd buy it on fucking Steam.
EDIT: But yeah, this thread is about Arkane's Bioshock clone.

BioShock is a stealth game?

Wrong era, vH, but you never pay attention to anything so big shock there.

Wrong era of what?

BioShock's and Dishonored's?
june gloom on 25/7/2011 at 00:21
Bioshock is more blatantly 40s and 50s art deco; Dishonored appears to be more straight up pre/post(?)-Victorian steampunk.
Yeah, they're exactly alike.

I think more important difference is in gameplay: Bioshock is more or less claustrophobic and linear, also a shooter. Dishonored looks more of an open world and you can choose whether to sneak or kill (allegedly, ok).
It`s late. JM said the above in one sentence already, I admit.
