I know Abrams has been following the Star Wars blueprint to a T, but all this "Rey is whoever's daughter/brother" stuff just seems a little too obvious. I'm guessing for Rey they'll come up with something completely different. They've already dipped into the family ties routine with Kylo Ren.
Although I'm still not understanding why Leia and Rey hug when they first meet.

Just heard a theory saying Rey's mother is Captain Phasmas. Doesn't seem so far-fetched when you consider she's the only available female character, and thus the only possible candidate. If they go for such a cheap twist though, I'm giving up on this series.
Anyway, lots of interesting/ridiculous theories on the web as usual. It's hard to steer clear of them all. I think in this regard the internet is a real curse. It's essentially killed movie magic. We'll probably have the entire plot summary for the next film laid out years before it's released, either through inference from really clever people, or through leaks.
Kinda reminds me of Lost which was also created by JJ Abrams. The fans thought of all possible scenarios in advance and essentially put the writers in an impossible situation.

Agreed with Brethren on "plug and play lightsabers." Sure, it's just a
thing with an On/Off button, anyone can
use it, but I thought it needed
some fencing training. Finn sparring with a Stormtrooper I can get behind, it would appear they get some mellee training, but Rey beating Kylo Ren like that? Great, the antagonist's even less of a badass.
You're making the assumption that Rey has never had melee training before. Given that we know next to nothing about her backstory, this is something of a leap of faith. I wouldn't be surprised, even if she doesn't belong to the Skywalker lineage, if she's a refugee of Luke's destroyed Jedi academy.

No need to keep bringing back the same characters over and over, and then make all the new protagonists blood relatives of the old ones on top of it, it's like you're grasping for "legitimacy" of some sort.
Man, you're going to hate the Old Testament.

I found the whole death scene a bit disappointing to be honest. Han Solo is one of the most loved and recognisable movie characters of all time, so they could have made it a lot more emotional and dramatic, or at least memorable.
The last thing he does before he dies is to lovingly touch the face of the son who just murdered him, and you don't see enough emotion in that?!

Didn't she beat up a bunch of bad guys in a fight in that scene where she meets Finn for the first time? In the prequels the lightsaber duels sometimes look more like ballet dancing where every single move is a result of years and years of hard Jedi/Sith/Whatever training, and it's all about some fancy fighting techniques, whereas in the new film the lightsabers seem like more "ordinary" weapons and the fights actually look like two people are trying to fight and hurt each other. So I don't find it that odd that Rey can handle the lightsaber pretty well, although I would have expected Kylo to be a much stronger opponent.

Hmm. Perhaps my choice of words wasn't very good. The whole scene is good until that point... then Kylo stabs Han Solo, Han falls down and then he's gone. Leia feels the death through the Force, Chewbacca gets a bit upset, and... that's it? I don't know, I guess I just wasn't expecting Han Solo to die just like that. Part of my childhood died in that scene, but it didn't really feel like that. But perhaps I'm still at the denial stage and I don't want to admit the fact that he's gone. :p Then again, if they "had" to kill Han Solo in this film, I can't really think of a more appropriate way, and trying to turn his death into a tear-jerker could have been just cheesy. I really need to see the film again.

I thought the best part of that scene was Kylo saying "thank you." Maybe it's me, but I think Adam Driver is pretty awesome and creepy in the film in general.

This makes no sense at all.
At all.

Exactly.
Her original weapon of choice is a staff which she uses to great effect. She seems like she can handle melee weapons already.

This is really sweet.
The truth is it's just awful choreography.

No, it's not just you.
After I got over his emo look I found him to be pretty good.

Oh, he's good at being creepy and/or a psychopath, as his prior acting roles would tell you. It's a shame they added 'whiny teenager' to the mix, is all.

Yes, that was my point. It would be a lame twist, essentially replacing "I am your father" from Empire Strikes Back with "I am your mother". But considering TFA is a carbon copy of the original, why should we expect anything else from the sequels?
You know at first I thought this was because of disney, but then I remembered Abrams actually did the same thing with Star Trek, that is, a soft reboot (thank god he didn't resort to time travel this time around).
Since I'd never seen anything Star Trek, I didn't much care for it. But from what I gathered about Into Darkness, it wasn't exactly new material. It was just a rehash of previous storylines. Which leads me to think this will be the case for Star Wars as well.
Anyway if you know of any other established female character, I'm all ears.
SubJeff on 30/12/2015 at 14:42
The reason it makes no sense is simply because it doesn't need to be an established female character.

I just came across a reviewer who posits that Rey could be a clone of Luke (from his hand), and that in her early years she might have been under the care of Maz Kanata, which is why she recognizes her eyes. I can't say I adhere to this theory, however the technology is definitely there in the SW universe, and it would certainly tie things up nicely in terms of why Maz has Anakin's lightsaber and why Rey is so sensitive to the Force... That would be an interesting direction to take. Incidentally it would also make the apparently offhand mention of clones a clever reminder that they're around.
Another two cents to add to the pile :)
