I like the fact that our force sensitive crew in the new movie were beginners and novices - their first saber fight was sloppy and uncoordinated, exactly how it would be for two people just learning how to use their powers. Ren has been trained some, but it's likely he's only had to use his powers against non-force sensitive people, so when he faces Rey, he's taken off guard and is unprepared. Rey was perhaps too good just a bit too fast, but maybe that can be chalked up to Ren's over confidence. Now they'll both get additional training from Luke and Snoke respectively, and their next couple of fights will be tons better.
Anyway, it's an interesting twist, as opposed to the other 6 movies where there was always a master around doing the fighting.
It'll be interesting to see if the rest of the trilogy just features them, or if they'll introduce someone else into the mix. We should remember too that Leia is capable to using her force powers as well. And we'll probably get a Snoke/Luke face off at some point too.
As far as Han going out with a whimper - I mean, whaddya want, he's old. 70 year old Han is not going to be anything like 35 year old Han. He probably knew there was a good chance he would die, but he promised Leia he would try to bring Ben home, and he was going to attempt it no matter what.

Hear all of what you're saying about Kylo Ren being an emo teenager and that's what makes this so perfect: (

Okay, almost all of this is just about perfect. :thumb:

This was ok for what essentially amounts to a fan service film. It felt very Abramsy in the sense of Into Darkness - it was the same uncomfortable combination of sequel and remake that just doesn't work very well for me.
Killing Han Solo seemed like a missed opportunity. The new villains were all awful. The First Order felt like a mixture of religious and soviet stuff that simply didn't work and didn't feel like Star Wars. Giving Ren a cross-shaped sword and having him pray to Vader while working for some LOTR/Harry Potter reject was bad enough without the confusion of trying to give it all a soviet feel.
I'm calling it now: Rey is Ren's sister, but they won't reveal it until the third movie.
This lineage stuff is making it seem like a single family is causing most of the trouble in the SW universe. It all fits together very uncomfortably.
The new droid was incredibly cute, and probably my favorite part.
Not impressed, but I didn't expect more from Abrams.

That doesn't make a lick of sense.
Also, "soviet feel"? The First Order is steeped in
nazi imagery, even more so than the Empire. Didn't the Nurnberg-style rally give it away?

The fans hated Hayden Christonson for being an emo git
No, they hated him for having no personality and never actually being depicted doing anything on screen. Same as every other character in the prequels.

I think JJ is actually on record saying the TFO was inspired by imagining what it would have been like if the really hardline Nazis who ended up in Argentina decided to get together for old time's sake and fuck the world up again.

That's pretty much half of the plot to Hellsing :P
Anyway, catch this: (

Rey's theme contains part of the Imperial March/Vader's theme, backwards. Pretty cool!

Maybe John Williams is running out of romantic era motifs to steal for his scores :P That's actually really neat, though. I'm pretty convinced at this point that Rey is Luke's daughter with all of the little clues sprinkled through the movie. The line from Maz about how the lightsaber was Luke's and his father's before him and now it's calling out to Rey is really the point where I was like 'wait a minute'. If she's not Luke's daughter it's a massive red herring.

She'll have to be Luke's daughter or a spontaneous immaculate conception like Anakin was. It also can't be a coincidence how similarly she's dressed to Padme, desert location notwithstanding.

Yep.
This was evident in the originals all along. The Imperial Officer uniforms, the Nazi grey of all the Empire ships, the
Stormtroopers. Vader's helmet is based on a German WW2 helmet. And in the new one the First Order have massive red banners with black symbols on them.
It couldn't be clearer.

The actress looks like a young Shmi. This cannot be a casting coincidence.
