A rant.
But I actually do think the movie was terrible. Very uninspired plot and the most boring characters to grace a Star Wars movie to date.

Kylo is one of the most complex characters imho.
What's the best film you saw last year Tony?

I thought it rehashed the New Hope plot a bit too closely. Also when Han walked out into the Bridge of Doom with no reason to exist other than defying health and safety regulations, it was a bit obvious what was coming. Otherwise, tremendously entertaining. Setting, characters etc felt like proper star wars but with a bit of a JJ spin, ie some snappy little bits of dialogue that would never happen under Lucas. I'm keen to see part 2 anyway. Or, er, part 8 I guess.
also: not greatly surprised to see Tony bringing the complaints about the female protagonist being too competent.

Ah yes, the old "misogynist" trope. That's both about as cliche and intellgent as insisting that anyone who criticized Condoleeza Rice hates women or that anyone who criticizes Obama is a racist. Perhaps you'd also like to tell me that I want starving grandmothers to eat dog food and that I enjoy kicking beggars?
If you're gonna mindlessly repeat the hive-mind's buzzwords then at least try to be a little more interesting about it. In the mean time can you please tell me something about Rey that's interesting other than her vagina?
You can't because she's nothing more than adult version of 12 year old Anakin Skywalker, imbued with no personality other than being amazing at everything because...plot...and they're somehow magically chosen by the force so it's, quite literally, impossible for them to fail at anything ever.
Which brings me to something else. I don't think you even read my post.
I think I hint at exactly why she's awful here:

about tied with Anakin Skywalker in Phantom Menance for sheer "broken suspension of disbelief" cringe factor.

That would be this film, since this was the only film I went to see in theatres last year.

Hey now, the Empire's questionable safety regulations is an important part of established Star Wars lore.

no just that most of what you post is horrendous.
oh and you threw Anakin under the bus, so what, I think that was a fairly easy sacrifice to make.

First point? fair.
Second point it's not just Anakin. The worst problem that most of the Star Wars lore has (with a few notable exceptions, like the original trilogy, the X-wing books and most of the Old Republic series) is that numerous characters are simply too overpowered and perfect to either be convincing or have a personality that is anything other than completely bland. Anakin is the worst offender, but almost every new trilogy Jedi is cut from the same cloth. Many EU Jedi are as well.
Also to be fair JJ Abrams has this problem with every damn film he makes. He did in Star Trek as well. Mr. Abrams: Do you SERIOUSLY expect me to believe that the person they'd turn to take command of a ship in distress is NOT any of the fairly senior officers present on the scene, but a wet behind the ears cadet fresh out of a cheating scandal?
It completely destroyed what was interesting about Captain Kirk, namely that he was a seasoned combat veteran with enough experience and hard-won wisdom to know to back up his act.
Even in Mass Effect it barely worked, and then only in the first game where Shepard was already an experienced special forces operator prior to the events of the game. Halfway through the second I began to cringe at all the obvious fanservice.
Rey is a terrible character for all of those reasons: they were obviously trying to make a female Luke Skywalker with Anakin's "chosen one" over-poweredness and got a character that's both as boring as Anakin and as insufferable as Luke(who is arguably the worst major character in the OT). Hell, the only personality she's got has to be explained by another character providing (nonsensical) exposition.

What it all boils down to:
In old school movies, the things that made characters capable or special were often hard won. It took them huge efforts of training and/or years of experience, frequently combined with a rough upbringing, to make them who they are. Now they just make the characters magically brilliant and able to achieve any feat required by the plot with absolutely no visible training or effort....just because they're that special.
That's what happens when the people who write movies are raging narcissists, and the result is completely fucking boring. It only kinda works with superhero movies(hence why they make so many) and even that schtick is wearing thin.
