The prequels were about Anakin's fall to arise as Darth Vader. The movies completely succeeded in that, with a satisfying conclusion. RotS was easily the best of the prequels.
I'd happily rewatch 1-3 even though Clone Wars was meh. The new trilogy I dunno if I'd watch again.

Anakin was a whiny brat who grew up to be a whiny teenager with anger management issues who was pretty easy to trick to the dark side. More of a stumble than a fall, really, with lots of slapstick thrown into the mix.
Also, the prequel trilogy completely fails to make the character relatable in any way. We are just being shown how he gets more and more angsty. We never really get to see him as a person, how he interacts with people outside what's necessary for the plot. We don't see how he trained to be a jedi, we don't see him interacting with friends or rivals, it never feels like there's a bond between him and Obi-Wan, supposedly a good friend.

Which conclusion to the prequels was the satisfying one? The long drawn-out terrible CGI fight where Obi-Wan has the high ground cause Anakin just murdered a bunch of children with very little prompting or reason? The one where newly minted Darth Vader waddles about and screams "Nooooooooo!"? The one where Yoda and Obi-Wan decide to just give up and hide for 20 years?

No one's arguing the prequel trilogy was
good, I don't think. They're saying it was better planned out as a story arc in comparison to this confused new trilogy of half-steps forward and quintuple steps back, regardless of the prequel tril's gamut of incredible gaffes when you examine its execution of the story.
Having said that, The Last Jedi, even with its flaws (which I fully accept it has, and they're too large to ignore; however, most of the fan rage is still stupid and irrelevant) was better than almost everything the prequels dished up. It actually tried to rework the mix to say something new instead of slavishly painting within the lines, and I can only respect that attempt to strike out and re-examine what we thought made the original movies good. It only half succeeded, because part of any critical re-examination in movie making is testing old truths by attempting to subvert them, learning something new from the process, and reframing the old beliefs in your new context if they hold up; but it never really got to do that last step.

Oh sure, I get that. I was just very surprised to hear that the prequels "completely succeeded" in showing Anakin's fall from a noble jedi knight.

Far better planned out.
Starker on 11/1/2020 at 09:51
Oh, absolutely. And far better planned out than the original trilogy. Terribly executed, though.
icemann on 11/1/2020 at 11:29
Definitely. Wasn't saying that their good movies on the level of the original trilogy.
The new trilogy just really annoyed me. And it's not a matter of nostalgia bringing on the hate either, as I quite like Phantom Menace, and I remember being SUPER excited going in to see that. Wasn't up to the level I was hoping for, but there is stuff in there that I enjoyed and continue to enjoy after having rewatched it a few times.

I'm not saying the prequels were good cinema. I would not go seeking them out, but when my family wanted to watch them I found myself paying attention most of the way through. I still hate Jar Jar and the fight scene at the end of AotC, but otherwise they're OK popcorn flicks and the latter half of RotS is genuinely good IMHO.

In recent "Are You Effing Kidding Me"-news, the Obi-Wan show has aired its first 2 episodes! And y'know what... it's... so-so. The first ep didn't do much for me, but I liked the second one. It had some ideas I haven't seen done in Star Wars before. Also it made me nostalgic for that Prey 2 game we never got. :|
